I am planning my first build since 2002. I have not been keeping up with the technology so I definitely feel lost these days. I am looking to get a system to get me into this decade and plan on running it for awhile (probably not 9 more though!).

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Small amount of gaming (Starcraft 2, some FPS), general Web browsing and home office-type. Also want to double for some home theatre use (blu-ray player, downloaded content).

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
$900 but would go up to $1000 if it takes it to the next level
tax and shipping are included

3) Where do you live?
Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Net orders are a good option.

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
Case, PSU, motherboard, CPU and cooler, RAM, video card, sound (maybe onboard? see notes below), hard disk (at least 1 TB), BD-ROM/DVD-RW (would be open to a BD-writer if the price is right), onboard NIC

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
Yes, wireless G PCI card, although I would toss this if the motherboard has built-in wifi.
USB keyboard/mouse
I have an IDE DVD-RW which works just fine so may be able to use it instead of a BD-ROM/DVD-RW combo unit? Is the minimal savings worth having a second drive?

6) Will you be overclocking?
Not planning on it.

7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
19'' LG panel with DVI
40'' Sony Bravia LCD with HDMI
I have both of these

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
Within a week.

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video? etc.
USB 3.0
Not too sure on crossfire/SLI and SATA 6Gb/s but I imagine yes
Onboard audio, if it fits my requirements (see note below)

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?
No I do not.
I may also consider a dual boot to XBMC on Linux for the home theatre part.

A few other notes:
I would like to make my purchases from newegg.ca if possible. I would consider tigerdirect or directcanada if they had some deals.

I stared scoping cases and this one seems be pretty solid all around: Antec Three Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower

Computer will be in the same room as my XBox 360 and Wii. I have a Sony Bravia 40'' TV and a Sony home-theatre in a box surround unit (with limited audio inputs). I currently run the audio and video for the video game systems into the TV and the use the TV optical out to the surround unit optical in for sound. Not an ideal setup but the Sony gear was free. Hopefully the computer can fit in to the 'model' as well.

Ideal setup would be:
+ a single HDMI output to the TV that does audio and video for home theatre use.
+ DVI output to the monitor and digital coax audio output to the surround unit for desk use.
Not sure how many motherboards have digital coax audio out. I could go with the standard mini-plug output to RCA inputs if necessary.

Appreciate any help you guys can provide.

That Windows license is only for that laptop. You'll likely have to buy a new license for this build.

Which online retailers are you planning on buying your parts from?

Do you already have a case in mind?

tiraides,

Thanks for the tip on the Windows license. I did some reading and it looks like I will need to purchase so I added some more dollars to my budget. I was also considering a potential dual boot with xbmc for the home theatre piece.

I updated my original post to capture this info as well.

Since you need a Windows license, you might actually not need to dual boot with Linux for the HTPC part. Windows 7 Home Premium comes with Windows Media Center which is very good for HTPC usage. Especially since you're planning on watching blu-ray content which Linux has some issues with last time I checked. Then again that was a while ago (six months ago)

Case wise, I would not go with the Antec 300 these days since the better Coolermaster HAF-912 case costs the same. However, since this PC is doubling as a HTPC, is noise level a huge concern for you?

Danny,

No concerns about the noise so I will trust your advice and go with the Coolermaster. I like the look of it.

My first try at the build:

$59.99 - COOLER MASTER HAF 912
$99.99 - OCZ ModXStream Pro OCZ700MXSP 700W
$124.99 - GIGABYTE GA-P67A-UD3-B3 LGA 1155 Intel P67
$219.99 - Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core
$52.49 - G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666)
$59.99 - Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST31000528AS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s
$69.99 - LG Black 10X BD-ROM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM SATA
$199.99 - SAPPHIRE 100314-2SR Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support
$109.99 - Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit

Total is approx. $1082 after shipping.

I think I've captured everything but I would like to shave about $80 to $100 off. I figure there may be some room for improvement with the video card, RAM and power supply. I am open to suggestions!

Why that psu? something like the antec earthwatts 650w would probably be a lot better for the money

Why get that mobo when you could get the msi g43 for 10$ more?'

You could get a single stick of 4gig 1333 for 39$ and upgrade to 8gig if you need/want more

Also a gigabyte 6870 is the same price with a 20$ rebate, and a 3 year warranty

Edit: You should overclock btw, but if you're never gonna do it go with an h67 board and non unlocked processor. Might as well save you some money :D

You can shave off $20 by getting this CPU + mobo combo:
$325 CAD - Intel Core i5-2500K CPU + MSI P67A-C43 Intel P67 ATX Motherboard

You can shave off $15 by going with this G.Skill DDR3 1333 RAM since A) you're not gonna notice a difference at all between the set you chose and this and B) This set will allow to expand to 16GB of RAM more easily:
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231421

You can shave off $10 by getting this significantly higher quality Antec PSU instead:
$90 - Antec NEO ECO 620C 620W PSU

I would go with this Asus HD 6870 for the same price since it has a longer warranty and better customer support:

Though just in case: Is your 40" TV a 720P or 1080P TV?

$76 - Antec NEO ECO 620C 620W PSU

Price is wrong. Showing up as $90 (plus $4 shipping.)

A certain other Canadian e-tailer that unfortunately I can't link to (self-proclaimed "Canada's Premier Computer Store") has the Seasonic SII 620C 620W PSU for $79 + $5 shipping.

I tried making a Sandy Bridge build and came out over budget by about $100 because of taxes and shipping. Newegg.ca really doesn't have good shipping rates like they do in the U.S.

Guys,

Thanks for all of your feedback. I revised my parts list and am looking for some additional critique.

$59.99 - COOLER MASTER HAF 912
$89.99 - Antec NEO ECO 620C 620W Continuous Power ATX12V v2.3
$324.98 - Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor + MSI P67A-C43 (B3) LGA 1155 Intel P67 combo
$37.49 - G.SKILL Value Series 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600)
$59.99 - Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST31000528AS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s
$69.99 - LG Black 10X BD-ROM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM SATA
$109.99 - Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit

I am still not 100% on a video card yet. The Sony TV does 1080p. These are the options I have been looking at:
$199.99 - ASUS EAH6870 DC/2DI2S/1GD5 Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX
$182.99 - XFX HD-687A-ZDFC Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX
$199.99 - GIGABYTE GV-R687OC-1GD Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX

Also, should I invest in a better CPU cooler or will the stock get the job done?

Total comes in between $1038 and $1050 depending on the video card.

I think you accidentally factored in the rebate for the XFX there. As for which video card, go for the one supported by a company that you trust most to handle your issues.

Stock HSF will be fine.
