Alright this will be my first build since the summer of '03. I am excited to fianally upgrade from my Athlon XP2500 box.

I am hoping to get some nice over clocking mileage on the e4300.

Any feedback is appreciated.

I would not buy a 965 based board at this point in time. Get the DS3R instead of the DS3, or another P35 based board. You could also save some money by going with a 650i board, but that could limit your overclocking potential somewhat.

G.Skill DDR2-800 is likely less expensive, and you won't have to deal with rebates -- I didn't get my OCZ rebates in on time, as they have a very short grace period, so fair warning there.

The P182 costs more for no real reason now that the P180 has been revised. Save some cash and get a P180B instead.

I don't know about that specific PSU, but some OCZs have ripple issues. I'd go with the Corsair 520watt or 620watt if budget will allow.

If you want to OC paying for a better HSF is a good idea. A Tuniq Tower will do a good bit better than that Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro.



Most importantly: What resolution are you looking at? 1600x1200 or higher? If so, get the 640MB 8800 GTS instead. You will run in to VRAM limitation issues with the 320MB card, particularly with moderate to high levels of AA/AF on.
 
Moshiach: This will be my main day to day box, x264 encoding, gaming ( not heavy amounts), and everything else. I don't need bleeding edge seeing as I am still putting along with my old Athlon rig. But I am looking for a major upgrade, it's been way to long.

My budget is in between $1400-$1500 roughly, but if I feel it is worth it a little can be added, that budget is before taxes in Canadian dollars. I will be buying all my parts from NCIX.com.

On NCIX the P182 black is $9 dollars cheaper then the P180 black, go figure.

I have never heard of the ripple issue, can you enlighten me?

The Tuniq Tower looks like a solid decision for only around 25-30 dollars more. I just want to verify that it does come with it's own 120mm fan.

For the foreseeable future I will be running at 1440x900.
 
I would suggest getting 64 bit vista. 32 bit seals you at 4GB and more likely vista is going need 4GB or more for it gaming sweet spot.

Yes, the board you linked is a good, solid board with 45nm CPU support, so upgrading your processor later is an option as well.

The Tuniq Tower does come with its own fan, unlike the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme. (the Ultra 120 is probably the best air cooler on the market right now, but... it's huge, just like the Tuniq, and pricey.)

At 1440x900 a 8800 GTS 320MB should be fine, but if the price differential isn't huge I would still go for the 640MB card to be certain you will be able to run high levels of AA and AF. However, if you're not heavy in to gaming, the 320MB card should suit just fine. In fact, the 320MB /should/ be fine, period.

I think it's just the Gamexstream line that suffered from ripple (very fast fluctuations up and down on the rails, particularly the 12v rails, which can kill components over time) but I'm not certain. I will try to find out if the model you picked has similar problems.

I have 2GB as shown in my sig and have yet to see any real difference in framerates from those running 4GB. I'm running Vista Ultimate 32bit.
 
I've been happy with my $4 each Yate Loons (and they were buy 2 get 1 free when I got them), so to me that Noctua fan looks like overkill of an extreme nature, but that's entirely up to you. There's no denying that they're quieter, but I also believe they don't push near as much air... and you can get like 12 Yate Loons for the price of one of them. ;)
 
I hear you on that, so in the end I am switching out the OCZ power supply for the Corsair

520watt, I am looking forward to a modular power supply too.
