Ok, looking to upgrade my system as I'm currently on my last build from 2/06 - X2 4400+, X1900XT, etc... Showing it's age badly and since it's been almost 4 years is time to upgrade. Since I'm a little out of the loop on current gear, heres my info:

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Gaming, video editing
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
$2500-3000
3) Where do you live?
ND
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. Please be very specific.
Upgrading everything - case, cpu, ram, PCU, GPU, etc...
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
Mouse, keyboard, 1TB internal SATA drive
6) Will you be overclocking?
Most likely - not interested in watercooling though
7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
24"
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
2 months (likely after Jan 1st)
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.
Firewire, otherwise standard stuff
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license?
Yes

Here's what I'm thinking at this time, keeping in mind I'll probably do this in the next 2 months:

Thanks in advance for any tips or changes.

You ram is just for show, With the optical out on the motherboard do you really need a sound card?
The VR for the main drive? The new seagate almost are at that speed and run $55 for 500gb
You going SLI? Otherwise you can drop down to a 520hx or TP550 for a power supply.

Gskill 1600 $140

500gb seagate

The asus monitor is on sale now, don't expect it to be there next month or week for that matter.

Look at the cooler master 212+ for cooling HS.

Corsair dominatiors are very overpriced.

G.Skill ripjaws or Ocz Obsidian series can match them with simplar performance at much lower price.

or

3x if you want 12 GB of memory

Have you taken a look a Lian Li budget line "Lancool" Same looks lower price.

I would suggest XFX over the Sapphire as you get much better warranty from XFX.

Evga x58 LE is about $70 cheap and good overclocker. 4 GHz stable overclock is very possible with this board and D0 step i7 920.

Raptors are waste of money, SSD is the way.

2x in raid 0

Thanks for the advice on the ram, just had it added as it was highest rated on newegg for 6gb at that speed.

I've looked at the lancool, but I like the solid aluminum Lian Li and I'll probably end up using this case for builds for years. I actually have a mid-tower Lian Li now I bought 5 years ago, but it's a little crowded so upping to a full tower.

The VR is for the main drive (basically just OS). I tend to keep everything else on seperate drives for if I need to reformat, I don't lose anything. Will think about an SSD instead.

Power supply I'll keep at 750 as it's give me option to go SLI if I decide to.

You're also probably right on not needing the sound card. Currently still use to motherboards having so-so onboard sound since I haven't purchased one in almost 4 years.

I'd spend the extra $5 for this better quality 750W PSU:
$115 - Antec Truepower New TP750 750W PSU

Your build is pretty similar to what I've got coming in the mail. Like Shiro said, SSD is preferable and that ram is unnecessary.

I spent ages looking for a better case, but couldn't find one that could hold my RAID array as I wanted, this case looks like it's going to be pretty nice, good choice! I'll let you know if a day or two when it gets here if it's any good if you'd like.

So if I was going to go with an SSD as my boot drive, would 40gb be big enough?

edit: Nm, thought Win7 install was alot bigger than it actually is.

Reason behind suggest a raid 0 setup is that SSD doesn't have great write speeds and as such Raid 0 would boost the performance to level where you will notice the increase in speed from regular hard disk.
