A FIRM which makes a disc that can hold 60 times more data than a DVD said it is ready to release the product next year.

InPhase Technologies, based in Colorado, has developed a commercially viable version of a holographic disc which can hold 300 gigabytes of data and can be used to read and write data 10 times faster than a normal DVD.

InPhase Technologies spokesperson Liz Murphy said that unlike other technologies that record one data bit at a time, holography allows a million bits of data to be written and read in parallel with a single flash of light. This enables transfer rates significantly higher than current optical storage device.

The discs, are 13 centimetres across and a little wider than normal DVDs. They store data in a light-sensitive crystal material using the interference of laser light. A single light beam is split and passed through a semi-transparent material. This acts like a filter, changing different parts of the beam to encode bits of information.

The altered beam and the reference beam are then recombined in the light-sensitive material and their pattern of interference provides a record of the encoded information.

another article. I dunno, it seems like this one might actually be released, but it's sort of low-key compared to some of the promises made about it earlier. Where are the 10tb disks with 400 MB/s reads and writes? And their promotional video (the one in wmv) seems to include such shocking facts as "We can read and write to the disk" and "We use ECC". Never woulda guessed :p

Oh, and they claim 120 mbits/s is 20 times the data rate of a DVD - sure, but that's 20 times the speed of a 1x dvd. Since 16x readers are common, and even in embedded devices 4x are no exception, this is a bit misleading. A 16x DVD is 22 MB/s, or aroung 176 mbit/s. So this is slower.

I see this as a way to accidentally destroy more media than ever. Why not move to a thicker material if you can write anywhere in it? As long as you're defining a new format, make it spherical or something so it's harder to break.

 
Hmm. A CD is 120 mm in diameter, with a thickness of ~1.5mm and a hole in the center of about 40mm. Therefore its volume is:
pi*(120^2-40^2)*1.5 = 19200*pi (in mm^3)
which is equivalent to a sphere of radius:
19200*pi=(4/3)*pi*r^3 => r=24.3 mm
so a ball 2 inches across is all it would take to have the same volume. Make it 3 to add a sponge rubber+kevlar(?) coating, and make them have flat edges such that a) they tesselate and b) they *don't* roll...

Maybe more like "data buckyballs" or something.

 
As far as I'm concerned, the term "commercially viable" can only be applied to products and technologies that have seen production at some level or another. Someone let me know when this happens ;)

Well neither do circles ;) I proposed flattening the edges into something that would tesselate; pick one (java).

well consider that InPhase is a Bell Labs \ Lucent Technologies spinoff
they have had slightly more then their fair share of commercially viable technologies :p
 
I met one of the guys that helped develop this technology (originally for NASA), it's easy to say he is a bigger nerd than all of us.

while the concept of holographic memory is quite old, you couldnt heretofor buy it
(of course its still not in the end user price range, but it will be avaialable outside of a lab)
and the real breakthrough here is in the media
