A co-worker wanted a new computer, so I saw the chance to upgrade.

I sold him my X3350 (Core 2 Quad), Motherboard & Memory from my fileserver which gave me some play money.

I have the build almost complete, & CPUs I purchased from lassiterb should be here tomorrow (Tuesday).

Once the system is online, I will post some PPD numbers from these CPUs with the A3 core.

System Specs:
  • NORCO RPC-470 Black 4U Rackmount
  • Dual E5504 Processors
  • SUPERMICRO MBD-X8DTL-i-O
  • Corsair 520w Power Supply
  • 6GB G-Skill DDR3 ( 1GB x 6)
  • Dell Perc 5/i Raid Card - Modified
  • Raid 5 - 7 x WD 640GB AAKS

Nice looking build. Thanks for posting the pics. I just picked up a Norco RPC-470 yesterday and I am looking forward to moving my main folding system into it this weekend.

No matter that hobby, it is pretty awesome to see that everyone likes porn. Computer enthusiasts love seeing a computer naked. Car guys like me love popping the hood and seeing what is under it. Both computer folks and car folks often use idealistically beautiful women for marketing and advertising as seeing them spread eagle at various shows are not uncommon.
 
Good looking build Evil. What are you using the big RAID array for? That looks like an impressive array. I would love to build an array like that for a media server.

The Dual processor motheboards require 2 x 8pin power connections.
The Corsair PSU has one 8 pin and one 4 pin. Had to use a 4<->8 adapter for the second.
Since the PSU has a large single rail, I can do this just fine.

On my E5530 builds, the Season 400w PSU on have the one 8 pin, so I had to use a Molex to 8 pin adpater to power those systems.

The Raid 5 holds all my TV Shows for the HTPC downstairs and technet downloads.(Only 1/2 Full)

Those Perc 5/i cards are only $100 on ebay and the mods i did only cost about $25.00.
Added a Zalman Northbridge heatsink to the card's cpu and moved the stock heatsink over to the main chipset on the card with the help of some arctic cooling adheasive. XtremeSystems had a great thread on these mods and i followed their steps very easily.
The card was designed for a forced-air flow case so it helps to keep it cool. The other option is to by a dual pci slow fan and have it blow on the card.

That is what I actually used until I did this modification last week during the rebuild.

I think you nailed it.

I use my for software and media storage.
 
I will have more pictures on thursday, when i build another system for my woman's scrap booking desk with that third E5504 processor i purchased.

@ metallicafan - When WHS 2 (Vail) is released, it will make setting up an array much easier and cheaper.
You can use simple sata cards instead of using the more expensive raid cards like i have in my setup.
 
I got the server online moments ago.

Of Course, I got a p6013, which is the worst performing WU of the A3 selection.
When I get a "more standard" WU, i can give some ppd numbers.

These E5504s are very nice and run cool.
At 100% load, cpu #1 is at 40C and cpu #2 is at 44C.
Since Heatsink 1 is 40% in the way of Heatsink #2, this is normal
If you look at Photo #3 above, you see the processor sockets are offset and close together.

Will also get some wattage readings tonight for those who are curious.

I really love that case. I have two now and will probably use them again for any builds going intothe server cabinet
 
Have some PPD numbers:

2 x E5504 2.0GHz (smp 8) +/- 12,000 PPD
This is about 2500 more points per day then my X5550 @ 2.66Ghz smp 8 (Same as Core i7 920)

I got my single E5504 system up and running tonight, but did not get a change to get F@H installed or any overclocking tests done.
