New ATI Core?

I'm on vacation, so I'm a bit out of the loop. I'm hearing a bit about a new ATI core, and increased 4870 ppd? Up to 5k? That would be thrilling.

I'm using a 4870x2 on XP. I'm assuming the new core hasn't enabled both GPUs to be used in Vista yet. Is there anything I need to do to upgrade to the new core? Delete the old one? Does it depend on the Catalyst version used?

Also, I think I'm using whatever version of CAL that comes with Cat 8.12. Should I upgrade to CAL 1.3?

5k? Not exactly. But I've seen around 4.5k from my 4870 on days when I've been lucky enough to get a whole bunch of 47xx units. There's definitely a big boost in performance with the new core. The downside though is that CPU usage is back up.

You should be updated to the new core automatically, but if not, just kill the client. delete the core, restart, and it should download.

The 8.12 Catalysts come with CAL 1.3, so no upgrade necessary :).

Do they have all 800 stream processors folding yet with the new ati cores? I'm surprised that I haven't seen more info about this (using 320 sps vs using all 800 sps).

Yes, all the SPs in a given card are used.

That is why a stock 4850 can get more PPD then an overclocked 3850 or 3870.

The goal now is to use those SP's more efficiently.
This will happen with the use of new cores, optimized CAL versions, and , if needed, and new client version.

As for the CAL, 1.2.1 should be used for F@H right now.
Those CAL dll have been optimized and tested to work correctly with the current Core.

CAL 1.3 is not optimized for F@H use yet, and might cause some problems if used.
Not saying it will or won't , but there is no PPD gain by using them.

Actually, for the smallest proteins, we are still not using all SPs on a 48XX.

This article was interesting: http://theovalich.wordpress.com/2008/11/04/amd-folding-explained-future-reveale/

".......The team at Stanford is taking some necessary steps to re-do the workflow and introduce local memory share. This could take months, so realistic goal is to have a new client coming in Q1′09.
Once that Radeon 4870 gets fully utilized, those 800 shaders and 70% of theoretical value (700-800 GFLOPS instead of 1-1.2 TFLOPS) should be good enough for reaching the level of GTX280.

Next story update will bring some views and opinions from AMD folk."

So it sounds like the new 4800 series cards are so different it will just take time to rewrite code and create cores that take advantage of everything. I am hoping for a large increase in ppd when this is done.
