new ASUS card has GPU on top!?

Indeed. Makes you wonder why the heck they put the die on the bottom of the card all these years. Heat rises, so it would be much more efficient to expel heat upwards instead of downwards.
 
Needs better pics , neat idea I dont think it would clear my CPU fan tho :(

The reason it's usually on the bottom is because that's part of the AGP/PCI-E spec. Don't buy this if you have a case that already inverts the motherboard ;)

AGP spec did not allow for it and other components to be on the other side of the card due to space limitations. IIRC, 6mm off the edge of the AGP slot was all allowed. I am unsure about PCIe spec and space.

By that logic no one with standard mobo orientation should buy any video-card on the market apart from this Asus one :p
 
Wouldn't this flip back to GPU-down on a BTX case? In fact, wouldn't that AX700 heatpipe take up quite a few PCI/PCIe slots on a BTX motherboard?

Asus says this was done to take advantage of the CPU's already-there fan, but it seems like they only designed this for ATX motherboards- bloody transitional designs!

Edit:
Specs page on the X700 (X700 LE, technically- only 400MHz on the chip) list it as having a 256-bit memory bus- I daresay that's a typo.
 
Whats with Asus and Lian Li LOL :D

First there heatpipe doesnt work properly with Lian Li Cases
and now Lian li's case will defeat the purpose of the gpu being on the top lol it'll be flipped back down :D :D

Maybe I'm not noticing it but, this GPU is on top? Looks like its where it always is.
