Barnaby said:Hate to say it, but without AOL, the internet wouldn't be the place it is today.. It's all about competition, and if you don't think that every ISP out their has to compete against AOL, you're a fool..
AOL is the largest ISP in the world (not that AOL will ever call itself that), and as such, has made the internet a household word.. You can knock on AOL all you want, and say it sucks, and they're a bunch of idiots, but you only see one aspect of it all.. the end user, and the client.. Do you know what kind of complex systems it takes to make the internet dumbed down, and easy enough for some hillbilly in the hills of alabama to be able to surf the web?? AOL has some of the most complex systems in the world running, to be able to service over 25 million customers.. It's not an easy task..
But back to topic, yea the AOL pc is kinda wimpy in the grand scheme of things, but it's a definate step up in comparison to the average computer that most people own. With the direction the internet is going, especially with broadband, and interactive content that requires high bandwidth, this computer will allow most everyone to be able to experience it.. It's definately not a bad deal, and for awhile AOL was giving them out for free.. think they ended that offer though, and it was only available for customers who were cancelling due to their computers not being robust enough to run AOL latest software well, since it has alot of streaming videos in it now, even over dialup..
Hope ya don't mind me useing your Laghing Smilies?starhawk said:![]()

starhawk said:i used aol once... about 10 years ago, lol. there are only 2 things wrong with aol:
(1) they sell a list of their customers' emails to corporations and then wonder how the devil their customers are getting all that spam
(2) imho nobody writes viruses for the aol browser b/c nobody would notice with all that aol bloatware on their systems.
they may be one of the biggest isp's on the planet, and they may have an incredible infrastructure, but that doesn't mean they aren't ham-headed.
Yeah, now the modifications will cost more than the whole freaking computer set upGlobalFear said:Someone should buy one and mod it! Flames, watercooling, a window!
akapaulk said:$300 for a computer, monitor, printer, and WIN XP sp1? This will sell very nicely in competition with DELLS. Many non-tech people will buy this. Smart marketing move. They use cheap parts, but good enough for browsing the web. They even included a modem for dialup users![]()
iceslice said:While i see why making fun of AOL is funny, realize that its the idiots that use it, not aol itself that gives it the bad name.
iceslice said:realizes he already spends $20/mo on internet service, why not commit for a year?
hiLaforge said:Aol is $23.90 a month
Many people have netzero, or other services that are $10 or less.
My town has a local isp that has NO advertising and NO form of "special dialer" that's only $7.95
- so.. ~14 to ~16 EXTRA a month..
