If you're new at the computer scene enough to get AOL, that computer would be great at that cost. I wish I could go back to the old days on my Celeron 433 when I thought if it ran it was awsome. I didn't care I got 10 fps, I was just glad to be playing half life.. Now all I do is waste my money on computer parts to get 100fps which I feel I need now for some reason 
well, to me and my other [H] comrades, this is the dumbest idea ever...but it will sell...A LOT...people like the idea of an "AOL Optimized" computer...but hey, i will tell my parents not to let anyone they know get it!! spread the word!!! AOL sucks!!!

When this thing first rolled out, I was the one that had to set the demo display out at work. The whole time I was doing it, I was totally laughing at it, lol. The monitor looked as if it was spray painted. And the printer it came with, OMG, it is like some retro ass sh*t.
The best part is the desktop. Talk about bullsh*t spam and spyware on your desktop. Crazy.

Let me get this straight:
AOL (POS) computer: about $300
+ "deluxe" upgrades: $100
AOL service (12 months @ modem price plus additional BS charges): about $300
Local computer store repair & maintainence (because the user probably won't know how to fix it theirselves): about $500+ per year (average)
Upgrade parts (because some idiot will buy them): about $500+ (average)
Total: about $1700+ for the first year and about $800+ per year after that
(I may be overexaggerating a bit, but the "average" AOL user isn't [H] like us )

Excpet for the crapastic hardware, the crappy service terms(1 yr subscription to AOL), and high probability of being a rip-off, it's not bad. Still, unless all of them came with F@H preloaded and hardwired into them so that it could not be removed, they suck (which they do anyhow).

A 2.0ghz celery is fine for most people's desktop use. I know we are all power users here, but its no fun making fun of all the people who don't need or want to have 200 browser instances open while burning a cd, downloading a torrent, and transcoding a DVD

Hate to say it, but without AOL, the internet wouldn't be the place it is today.. It's all about competition, and if you don't think that every ISP out their has to compete against AOL, you're a fool..
AOL is the largest ISP in the world (not that AOL will ever call itself that), and as such, has made the internet a household word.. With the direction the internet is going, especially with broadband, and interactive content that requires high bandwidth, this computer will allow most everyone to be able to experience it.. It's definately not a bad deal, and for awhile AOL was giving them out for free.. think they ended that offer though, and it was only available for customers who were cancelling due to their computers not being robust enough to run AOL latest software well, since it has alot of streaming videos in it now, even over dialup..

I think most people on forums, and who are into computers almost feel it to be a requirement to put down AOL, since it does cater to the masses.. While this is very true, you can't blame AOL for this.. They cater to what brings in the most money.. And in this case, it's Joe Sixpack, and the vast sums of money a year AOL gets from him.. time are changing though, and AOL knows this, so that's why AOL is trying to convert everyone to a broad band plan, and also make more services that take advantage of this.. which is why the push for the AOL PC, since most of the subscribers have ass old win95 compaqs from 91'.. which aren't going to handle all the streaming apps AOL provides now, like on demand videos, movies, and streaming music..
And for $300, you will get a base system that can perform all this well.. Not a bad deal really..

i used aol once... about 10 years ago, lol. there are only 2 things wrong with aol:
(1) they sell a list of their customers' emails to corporations and then wonder how the devil their customers are getting all that spam
(2) imho nobody writes viruses for the aol browser b/c nobody would notice with all that aol bloatware on their systems.
they may be one of the biggest isp's on the planet, and they may have an incredible infrastructure, but that doesn't mean they aren't ham-headed.

Viruses don't have to target the browser itself, and are more often targeted at the operating system themselve. But AOL is still vunerable to most browser viruses, since it's running a modified version of IE.

While i see why making fun of AOL is funny, realize that its the idiots that use it, not aol itself that gives it the bad name.
The idea of an AOL PC is great. People want big brand names becuase it makes them feel comfortable with their purchase. They don't want to learn how to fix things themselves, so they chose a company that won't go out of business to warentee it for them. Bob needs a new computer, sees this "deal", realizes he already spends $20/mo on internet service, why not commit for a year? Regardless of the "hidden" or accumulative costs, its a really good idea.

You get access to most paid sites, like CNN's streaming vid's, ABC, etc.. Pretty much anyone who Time Warner own, you get a deal on. If you were to subscribe to all the different content provider's, it comes out to something like $130 a month.
Now to some this is worthless, but to alot of ppl, this is the real benefit of AOL. They give you alot of content that you would normally have to pay extra for.. But, in AOL's defense, they do have other options for you vs. the normal AOL plan. Compuserve is a cheaper option (and the option you want for adult sites.. go figure), and then there's the netscape plans to, which is equal to Netzero's cost. AOL also has an a la' carte plan in the works to further customize your plan.
