New Amd Card Specs

2048 cores seem low for the high-end model.

dont forget that 5870 launched with 1600 cores, twice as many than the previous gpu.

im guessing we still dont know jack at this point, if amd doesnt launch their high-end gpu with at least 2500+ cores it wont be worth to upgrade if you already have a nice crossfire setup.

thats assuming the cores are identical... they could be better performing cores.

also the 6970 has 1536 cores.

So if the new unit has 2048 cores, then this is a 33% increase in cores. Now this doesn't mean it will have a 33% better performance than the 6970. Your likely to see a larger increase due to increase clock rates and memory rates as well. Either way if these are the correct specs for the next gen 7XXX series cards then they will be very impressive in terms of power draw and performance. If the rumor mill is true then these cards may very well start putting nails in nvidia's coffin.

i think the 7870 is going to have my name written on it, of coarse depending on price and performance increase. Otherwise i might just pick up a second 6870 and run crossfire. That is if i even need to update with the next gen games.

The 7900 series is a new arch called GCN. The new arch must of boosted the core performance substantially in order to only go with 33% more as you mentioned. I am eying the 7870 as well. Buy that and get a 8900 or w/e when they finally come out with DX12 maybe? lol

Doubtful, Kepler will be a lot closer to the release of GCN, than Fermi was to the release of Evergreen.

why do you care so much about power draw for the high-end model?

do you even know what high-end stands for?

just give me more cores and ill take care of the TDP.

if you want low TDP then settle for low or mid range cards.

im not talking about laptops or tablets here.

While I partly agree with you, TDP and power draw need to be kept low or we would see a much larger amount of power inflation. Remember back when a top-end video card didn't need much extra power (maybe a molex) and fit in one expansion slot? Nowadays, you can get a card that needs three PCI express 8 pins and takes up three slots, and thats WITH a market concern for TDP and power draw. If there was no mass concern for efficiency, the cards today would double as central heating systems.

:::looks at GTX 4xx nvidia cards:::

too late...
