Never overclocked before, seeking advice

Hello,

I'm an overclocking virgin, I hope this is the right section, I just finished my first build several months ago, and am looking to overclock my CPU, mainly to see an increase in performance of Flight Simulator X, I could get a better computer but still saving up for a nice one in the near future.

Is there a guide or anything I should follow as I am very new to this?

I have the following hardware...

Intel E8400 stock at 3.0ghz
Gigabyte EP45-DS3LR
4GB DDR2-800 RAM
512mb ATI HD4850
750 Watt Corsair PSU
250GB HDD
Sony DRU-865S DVD burner
Antec 900 Case + 2 additional 120mm fans

make sure you memory voltage is set to the manuf recommendations. 1.8V is stock and most performance memory wants about 2.0 which means you need to add +.2 volts in the bios.

Set Vcore to 1.375 V which is well under any Intel max but sufficient for a decent OC.
Set Vmch to the next highest available setting/increase
Set your Memory Mulitplier to 2.0 to ensure that for FSB under 400 your memory will NOT be OCed. You come back later and adjust that after you find your "happy" cpu OC.

Now just raise the FSB in 10MHz increments, rebooting as you go. I suggest you burn a bootable copy of memtest86+ and boot with it and let it run the first 3 tests (takes about 2 minutes) to check for stablitly. You should not need to do that for the first couple of FSB increases but once you get over 360 FSB or so I would start using it to prevent a "freeze" when loading windows which could trash your windows install. By booting to memtest you can check that you have not gotten to the edge without risking having to reinstall windows.

Download and run Realtemp. Download and run some stress test software to check temps and stability once you start getting a decent OC (3.2 or higher) going. 80C under load for core temps is about where most of us call the line. CPU is rated to go 100C before it thinks it is hot and a few C above that it will just automatically shut down.


Everything you need to know about your gigabyte is in the first several posts in this tread, 99% of it applies to your board and any bios settings not mentioned you do not need to worrry about in getting a basic OC going.
