nice. I think will have 12 of the 10k's

coming off machines with sata 7200 rom drives this should be a VERY nice upgrade

AND my cables are layed out just like how you are :) Mine are long though, so i can move my ran in and out of it's home under the desk....

Yep! I looked at your pictures to see how the rack was--I really like it!

Yeah I have a patch panel in the back which is wired into the patch panel in the front so I can completely disconnect the rack. A bit unusual, but I wanted the front of the rack to look super neat (and avoid crimping any CAT6).

Specs:
Modded AIC 4U 24-bay case (modded to accept an ATX PSU and quiet fans)
Supermicro X9DRI-F
2x Intel E5-2620 6-core CPUs
32GB DDR3 EEC RAM
3x IBM M1015 flashed to IT for the 24 bays

Its purpose will be an ESXi all-in-one router/firewall, NAS, DB, HTTP, VPN, media, and whatever else I want to throw on there. Just waiting for Amazon to get some 3TB WD Reds in stock (direct from Amazon) to fill half of the bays (12) to start.
 
Nice looking rack. I've noticed that APC UPS (or at least similar) in a few setups here. I was looking for an affordable rackmount UPS. Is particular model cheap? Or is it just popular/readily available?
 
You can get them from UPS resellers pretty inexpensively compared to new. The serial models are usually 50-100 dollars less than the USB ones.
 
Finally took a shot of the back of my rack. I'll probably rearrange stuff again though as I have a few more servers to stick in it.

I got mine on ebay in Ontario for 300$ shipped with rails & brand new batts. Some day ill end up getting the network card for it. Awesome unit, and works very well.. Only pulling 1 bar on it right now with all my gear in it and my desk plugged into it.

I got it on ebay with new batteries for $234 and I got the network card for $11. :D

I got mine off of ebay for $175 shipped with rails and my card for $36. Course mine blew up but it was under warranty still so APC sent me a refurb for free.

I put a used AP9619 into my APC SUA750XL which is in my rack in the basement. I got the card and temperature sensor for $21.
Nice to have the info readily available while sitting in my 'office' on the second floor. The GUI is very easy to use.

Speaking of management cards I got a APC AP9606 for $5 bucks. It's the old old old management card. I plugged it into my 1500 SMART-UPS, ran a cat5 to my switch, and the NIC lights on both ends light up. However I can't *find* the web gui anywhere on my network. I scanned my network with nmap, and checked the device list in both my firewall and switch, but none of the ips leases are the APC management web page. I tried resetting the device with the reset button the back. Am I doing something wrong or is the management card bad?

I had to use a tool from APC to set my card up with a static IP. The APC cards will only use DHCP if it has the vendor flag set.

The tool will find it on the network? After some more googling seems like I have configure IP with a serial cable via telnet

You could always run a wireshark session and look for the MAC address of the management card.

Yep it scans the network for unconfigured APC cards and gives you its MAC address and lets you set a static IP so you can get into the web interface.

Its called "Network Management Device IP Configuration Wizard" for the AP9617. Quick looking I couldn't find the equivalent for the AP9606.
 
:eek: So many awesome home setups. Can't wait to start my career so I can join in on this thread posting pictures :p. Everything I want is way to expensive for me to afford any time soon though.
 
Start my new job on Aug. 1 and one of the first things I'll get to play with is one of these

Also get to work on some Cisco 6506's and 6509's. New router is going to be a 3945e. Pics of the new server/networking room will come once I get in there and we get it all setup.

Great suggestion on the wireshark. Always forget to use that amazing tool.

With wireshark I found out that it was on a 172.16.1.x network, so I couldn't reach it with my 10.x network. So I changed my IP to a 172.16.1.x one and was able to login and found out that it had DHCP disabled. I must have reset it 9001 different ways, but no matter what it wouldn't load default settings. Anyway I changed it to a 10.x IP and now I can configure it just fine :D
 
Talking about network cards I have an APC 1400 with network card but the slot seems dead. I swapped a known working card from another unit and nothing, no lights or network link. Serial port seems to work fine, however. Probably no way to solve this without a replacement?

Yes BUT the default settings are DHCP + BOOTP and for whatever reason a BOOTP request is honored by at least my DHCP server.

Read the reset instructions. It's a total PITA, basically pressing the reset button will allow you serial access to the card (the card takes over the APC's serial port) without a password or with the default password, then you reset it through the serial terminal. Make sure you have the correct serial cable... if you use a standard straight through serial cable this causes the APC to instantly shut down!

I heard through the grapevine that the position was filled. They also hired a new supervisor since my old manager left shortly after I did.

How's the job/certs coming along?

Stress is about 11/10. There are so many bandaided mission critical systems that I'm basically in triage the entire time. I have no time for certs as it stands. The good news is that I'll be getting a nice raise in about a week.

haha now you guys weren't the reason at all. I would have really liked to finish that project but it just wasn't in the cards. that place was so stressful that it was getting to me.

New company. I'm now more of a contractor and will be managing a school districts network, 13 schools total. I will handle all networking and infrastructure related systems. We actually have a brand new high school that is almost done with construction so its time for us to get everything up and running.
