Network pics thread

The sad part is, they have a well-established local company that does the network and all of their support. They pay a lot of money per year, and this is what their handiwork looks like.
Trouble is, when you're a onsite dispatch tech for SoHo support (like I was back in the day) and you say "I could clean this up for 2 hours @ $125/hour, or just leave it in this big farking mess" 96% of small businesses will save the money and claim they'll do it (which either never happens, or causes bigger problems).
Yep this is 100% it they don't want to pay. They're not interested in having their stuff setup the correct way even if it would increase performance.

Was at a place today where their sonicwall bit the dust that the "server room" aka where the water heater is at...smelled like a sewer.

I got to set up (and play!) with both of these pretty soon. Our core network is already a stack of the EX switches, but will be my first time as a sysadmin setting them up. J-Web and JUNOS = amazing.

SRX looks to be a nice improvement from a feature standpoint from the ASA we currently have as well.

Sounds about right, equipment stuffed in any place, not to mention with more heat lol...

J-Web sucks, at least on the SRX. Making changes through it breaks shit half the time.

Borrowing this from my colleague for a while, I was all for hating Macs because of the experience I've had with them at work, but when you've got one on it's own, it's awesome. It's a "Late 2008 13inch" version, according to Apple support.
Considering asking how much he wants for it..

Macs don't tend to depreciate much. I just sold my old Mac Pro and MacBook Pro after owning them for around 3 years. The Mac Pro sold for about 80% of purchase price (crazy eBayer?) and the MacBook Pro for around 50%. Hence i'd suggest you buy new (there are some great deals to be had- i think the last 13" MBP offer was about £700). Unless your mate is offering you a steal :D

That's interesting; I don't have that kind of trouble with it. I mean, things have gone wrong, but less than 1% of the time -- not half the time.

Picked up a new switch the other day for home, Cisco 2970G. (Yes, all Gb) I still need ears for it and some shorter cables.

If you're near a Fry's you might be able to get the current base 13" MBP for -$200 for the next couple days:

Microcenter also often places this model on sale for -$100-200.

Haunter, yuck is right. There is some old telco gear there...the big gray cabinet is likely cards for an old 1A2 system. I spot a protector on the left side of the pic too.

yeah with some fiber slammed into, and poorly ran

the lack of wire management is bad

I might tidy it up FOR THEM, as its in my building, but its the building owners. we are a conglomerate of a ton of agencies, and we are in a county owned building

their IT staff hates the racks, but the building people specd and installed the racks 'for them' without asking for input, and there is no room for real wire management

the hope is that in the next year most of it will migrate to my server room and all that will be left is the 2 patch panels and one gigabit switch. and that will handle 2-3 pcs and a printer and thats it

sadly its the DMARC for 4 T1's, and it will be a while before those go anywhere, if ever.

yeah its a switch, gigabit even!

atleast I think its gig

it doesnt fit the other way because the rack is too shallow

Will run it at around 5V ish, pulling air out, also take y drill and make the pin holes that are on the side of the case a bit bigger to pull air in.

Got my Cisco lab rack yesterday along with my Avocent CPS1610 IP Console Switch. I had to make custom made RJ45 cables for the console connections. It works great, you just telnet to whatever port on the Avocent. Say your switch is on port 5, just telnet to IP:3005. I still have to get ears for my other 2600 router and figure out mounting for the 881 and the Avocent on top.

Yeah indeed, I've had a quick look on Ebay and the model I have atm is still around £600 to buy on there
This one is a bit bashed up, got a few dents and scratches here and there too; dunno if that makes a difference on the price side of things.

Time will tell if I made the right decision...

And before anyone says it, yes I know the wiring needs work.

*goes to ebay and buys the Avocent*

Was looking for one of these for a nice price. Thanks for the tip.
If you are looking at the same one I got, make them an offer. Let me know if you get it and need help with it. Mine was a PITA to configure with an IP. I had to make my own DB9 to RJ45 cable from a Cisco console cable.

I just paid the 51 bucks 40+11 shipping. Not worried about it since i had 41 bucks in my paypal account from a month or two back i forgot about lol.

I have DB-9 to RJ-45 adapters and such at home and work if I need to set it up there. Shouldn't be too bad but I will keep it in mind, thanks.
