it has 6 1gig chips in it and 2 2 gig's.. Looking on ebay 6 2 gig chips is about 75$ :) might do it up to get 16gigs ram in it, or price out 8 4 gig chips.

It has 6 x 72gig 15k sas drives in it too.. works 100% only down fall is its GOD DAMLY DIRTY FULL OF DUST!

Tomorrow i will remove the cpu's and re-thermal paste them, and dust this beast out..

Those aren't too bad. 580/585s are much worse when running 100% cpu lol.

Switching those 120W chips for L5420s (50W) would help a lot with the heat though.
 
I have to admit I got rid of all my old Dell 2950s, and HP DL385s because they were too noisy and power hungry. I'm just left with HP Microservers and custom SuperMicro jobbys.

Currently using it to study SWITCH, running almost every protocol covered. I'll be hosting the GNS3 topology on my i5/16GB DDR3 desktop once I start ROUTE/TSHOOT and that same desktop also hosts the "server farm" which I use to maintain my M$ skillz outside of work.

Also to explain the host names I posted an excerpt from my network documentation:

I have large-ish out-of-warranty VM clusters based on both server types that we are always looking for parts for.

I have given out so many things on the freebies thread and never received a single thing that i have asked for, so i no longer give out free / working equipment now.
 
I just sold a working 2950 III for some good money locally. I wouldn't give one of those away.
 


I got my arduino UNO and been messing around with it. I still need to get some wire scraps from work (telco frame wire) to connect the terminals then I'll be able to start on sensors. This will be used as an enviromental monitoring device. There are 6 analog inputs that will take a voltage from 0 to 5 and convert to a value of 0 to 1024, so using a voltage divider I can measure DC battery voltages. There are also some sensors made for arduino that will provide a reading in this range, such as a hydrogen sensor I ordered.

There's also 10 digital inputs which are basically a on/off state based on a voltage applied to it. Should be able to use these for things like smoke detectors. I will need to figure out the electronics on how to make it set off but should not be too hard.

I coded the serial app last night, just a really basic command line app with literally like 5 commands. The monitoring app I'll code will interface with it and grab the data and interpret it properly.


They also make an Arduino mega which has 16 analog inputs and like 50 digital ones. So if this works out and I get to a point where I need more sensors, I can always buy that.

Basically going to be a low cost net guardian. :p
 
red, that's the same unit i was going to order last week, but holding off till i get back from vegas :)

I have a 1950 III that I'm wanting to great rid of. The case is a bit bent, but it physically works great.

Powered on the hp, tonight, it sounds like a dam turbine in the house till about 1-3 min after then it settles down. I removed the cpu's to see that it had some really hard caked on cpu grease, so i'm going to re-thermal grease it then then use for a few days, i need to update the bios in it too.

As suggested above, new cpu's & a new psu as one is dead :(

So if i sink in a few $$ to this machine i can have a nice lab unit or move my sbs to this machine and use my R415 for other stuff.

Never played with ilo, but i guess i will play with that soon too.

To add to all this, i installed Xen 6.0 to it and it detected the sas raid card and works great.

PSU's are a common problem with these....

Don't leave them on standby.... Ie plugged in but server not turned on....
They cook themselves. And hence they die.

You can test why, by plugging in your power meter.... Feed power to server.... But don't turn it on.... See how much power it drags.....;) then realize the fans don't spin and you will understand why they die.

If looking for a replacement, try and find ones with part number RPS-800 I think they are... Last gen and they seem to last longer.

How would it be different than two separate circuits that are on the same leg? Or are redundant power supplies specifically designed to be on two separate legs or phases?

Next server I build I want to go redundant PSU but given I only have one power source at home, it will be mostly so if one blows I'm still good, and it also allows me to walk the power to another outlet/source if I have to. (ex: UPS maintenance). So would this not work if both are plugged into same source? Since at the end, the hots and neutrals do combine if on the same leg/source.
 
Usually you put each PSU on their own UPS and circuit (power feed) so it's fully redundant. Putting them both on the same circuit only protects it from a PSU failure, not a circuit failure.

Went over this before.

We have two feeds, A and B.

Plug in cable to feed A, plug one side of the other end to server1ps0 and the other side to server2ps0. Plug in cable to feed B, plug one side of the other end to server1ps1 and the other side to server2ps1

posted a picture at one point, i will have to find it again
 
Updated Home Network. I'll post more PIC's when I finish cleaning up the DC Closet and installing everything.

Ya most proper data centers / rack setups have 2 PDFs one per side of the rack a and b.

For me at home I could give to shits if my server powers off, it's a home setup. I know I have some nice equipment, but I don't own a data center so it's not mission critical. Sure I try my hardes with 100% uptime but hey money can only stretch so far :)

I know why the plus fail, it's a dumb idea to have the fans not move any air.. I noticed this when I left the sever plugged in it was creating heat even tho it was off.. Weird..

Dells don't do this lol...
 
Our reasoning for y-cables is that we were finding that the PDU itself, provided by our colo had too few plugs for the circuit size. We have a 20 amp circuit but were filling the plugs and only hitting around 20% load.

To fix this we did the following

A few weeks later we added the second feed from a different ups so we are redundant and cabling is alot cleaner.
 
Dash- Why do 16gb now. Why not just save, go for a full 32 or something, and save yourself the money later, when you most likely will use all 16, maybe all 32?


I have an HP w/ 16gb, and I use it all... sucks...

good point.. :) however before i do anything i need to change the processors in this beast, its a power eater and WELL i'm sweating in here right now LOL!

I stuffed it into my rack this morning to get it off my work bench, and powered her on in the rack. I will power it off in a bit here as i don't use it yet.

I did a dumbass thing tooo, I forgot to write the admin and default password down before i stuffed it in to the rack :( ( its on a label on top of the cpu clip :( )

I found a pair of newer cpu's with less power usage for 50$ on ebay, going to grab a set.
 
I would love to pick one of those up, but for now I need to save for a newer car.

lower power lower heat = win for my room LOL

If this server works great i might even order 8 x larger 2.5" sas drives..
 
haha i know the sweating, i keep my storage server and my ESXi box + my network equipment all in my bedroom adding to the heat from my desktop and 3 monitors. On a typical day my room is whatever temp it is outside + at least 20f. Last few days its been 100 outside so yeah.....

Edit- Btw I checked server stock and we had 1 box with 2 of those supplies in it, but they were both burned out. Sorry dude :'(

no it's a different box, uses 3.5" ultra scsi drives, its older but works.

the one i have is a DL 380 G5 :) nice machine still in my books.

I see that hp still uses the same chassis layout too.
