If you enjoy doing it, then you wouldn't want it to be your main job. After a while, it becomes a pain in the ass.

You should always get a job that is your passion and that you find fun (if you can find one like that.) It makes work much more enjoyable, you're more productive, and raises work moral. Going to work isn't a chore then.

This is true in a way. I love playing with servers and stuff, but realized that after 3 years of doing server work, it was not what I wanted to do the rest of my life. Then again the particular position I had did not help. There was way too much politics, and the IT manager there was insane.

I love my new NOC position though. I wish I could post up pics of the equipment where I work, but I highly doubt it would be allowed.

...which begs the question: Whats the most RAM you've ever seen in a server?

It was in our SPARC server that ran the oracle backend for 4.3 million customers:

32 4-core processors 2TB of RAM. It was a freaking beast.

But it was only 16GB per core...

Wow, that's a crazy server. You could put Citrix on there and publish Crysis as an app. :D

Thankyou, but I must agree. I have "other" interests, as I find IT interesting, but I find it 1000x cooler taking mechanical engineering classes, owning a car shop on the side working on rotary engines, and building a new shop/maintaining a 1891 house. Well, all of that along with being married and raising my awesome 4yr old son :). I learned the hard way that doing what you love will ruin it in a short time. IT is a good job, but my love(s) lie elsewhere- and I suggest to anyone else whom may read this to do what you are good at, but keep what you love to yourself.

I spent the evening upgrading our pool to XenServer 6.0 + all latest patches. We were running on 5.6 for quite some time.

It was awesome because I was able to do it from home via VPN. :)

Though I was a bit worried about that part...

I see pidginshit :)

Xen, looks pretty sweet, how you like it compared to hyper-v 2008r2..

To be honest, I'd be happy with either XenServer or Hyper-V. I like Hyper-V's dynamic memory better than XenServer. However since I run both, I don't mind working with either of them.

Also, I <3 Pidgin. :)

I'm thinking of moving back to XenServer from ESXi as i've been having a lot of issues recently. I seem to recall my only qualm with XenServer previously was the inability to overcommit RAM (in the free version).

I'm been debating on Xenserver free or Proxmox as my next solution for home. Xenserver does look pretty nice, even the free version offers quite a nice set of features.

If you use local storage or NSF on XenServer you can enable thin provisioning as well. Unfortunately I'm not using NFS or local. However luckily I have 6.75TB RAW on the MD3000i. :) Though I'd still like to use thin, no biggie though. I use the hell out of thin provisioning on our Hyper-V boxes though.

Not a great start- just installed Xenserver 6 and rebooted and it's hung on the white bootup screen :-/

I would assume that's fine, though I've never did a flash drive install before; I'd think it would behave the same. Latest stable board bios, etc?

Yup. I have another identical server but not sure if the flash drive in it is big enough so I might have to get up to install a larger one :)

I really am having no luck today- the installation is hanging just after the point of accepting the EULA on the other server!!!

and this free triial never expires right ? it's just limited to hardware and stuff ?

I have quad core xeon and 32gigs ram.. and hope to use iscsi for my vm's to live on..

I think you still need to get the "xen free" license by signing up for free. It expires every 12 months, because that's how they roll.

what is more used and liked tho :) esxi ( free OR xen ( free )

Thinking about converting my server to one of the 2.

Still need to think about how im going to backup my vm's...

Looks like an easy awesome upgrade. We played with it. The networking was a CF for us? Any chance you could screenshot that?

Took some pictures of my 2 newest rackmounts: Dell Poweredge 2950 III and Fujitsu RX200 S5.

Dell Poweredge 2950 III
2x E5440 2.83GHz
8x 2GB PC2-5300F
1x Sandisk Cruzer 4GB /boot
2x 73GB 15k SAS RAID1
4x 1TB 7.2k SATA RAID5
1x Intel Pro/1000PT
1x Perc6/i - backup battery needs to be replaced though.

Bought the USB because I thought I might use it (ESXi or whatnot) but ended up sticking something else on it and figured I may as well still use it for something.

Are they quiet ? I know the 2950's 1's and 2's were loud :( but not sure about the 3's..

I work on them all the time but they are in rack enclosures so i can't tell if they are loud or not.

The Fuji;s look nice..

My asus is SILENT hence why i bought it.. (silent after new bios revision installed and turned on smartFan II )

typical rack server loud but not SUN loud (i.e. deafening). If you have all 8 DIMM slots in the 2950 filled it will not let it go into quiet mode but it is still not full blast. I think the RX200 is quieter and less annoying to be honest but it has been a few days since I had the 2950 powered on.

Another reason why some of the "NEW" stuff is nice,, nice and quiet, or you can tell it to have fans at certain speeds etc etc.

Main reason for my 1u asus is quietness.. I can hear the fan spin a little bit in speed if i reboot all my vm's at once etc etc, but nothing that would distract you.

If you cold boot it, it takes about 15-20 seconds for it to do it's thermal tests then it's silent after that.

I should take a movie of how quiet this thing is..

MikeTrike :) just installed xen, im actually liking this :)

Question tho,, how would i convert or get my 2008r2 hyper v vm's into this ?

Download XenConvert, works great for Windows Guests. You can also import most .vmdk and .vhd's into it, I've had fairly decent luck with it.

But as for XenConvert, you install it on your guest VM that you want to convert. Run it in there, make sure it has "work space" within the guest you put it on to do the conversion and send it over. I think you can also use shared drives/folders to use as a work space.

wonder if that works for debian then ?

Can xen, import a hyper v file ?

having problems, or trying to figure out how to get the local hard drive to install and be used for storage right now... I have a 250gig sata drive in the computer but not able to use it for storage.. only see's the 8gig usb stick that xen is installed on....

Should be able to, Hyper-V uses .vhd's

As for the 250GB drive, did you have it in when you installed XenServer? It's pretty much a stripped down version CentOS Linux, so you should be able to find any commands you need to check drives, partitions, etc. Can you verify if it sees it at all? Do lspci on the CLI to see what's there.

As prommised :)

Hrere is my new Qnap 410U, bought from MikeTrike, THANKS FOR THE DEAL!

has 4 x 1tb 7200rpm drives, came with rails. Just updated the os on it, and configured it for raid 5 + hot spare..

Soon as hdds come down ill migrate all 4 hard drives to 7200rpm 2tb or 3tb drives.

Pics.

2T + on raid 5 your asking for failure unless you got some backup system going.
