I hope this post is in the right area, correct me if I'm wrong please :). My question is: Is it possible to also use my Netbook as an external for my desktop, i.e. some type of usb connection? This may be a dumb question, but I just want to know my options before going and buying an external.

Thank you for you thoughts

What exactly do you want to do with an Netbook? Use it as a giant external hard drive?

No, I wanted to use it as an external to transfer files to my HD after I reformat it. Thus I didn't want to go out and buy an external when I already have 250gigs free space on the netbook. So I was just wondering if there's some type of connection that would allow me to hook it up to my computer and put files directly onto the netbook.

Umm, it sounds like you want to use it as an external hard drive of sorts. There's several ways you can do this off the top of my head:
1) Make sure that the PC and Netbook are on the same network/LAN and are set up correctly to see one another over the LAN. Just share files that

2) Take the hard drive out of your PC and hook it up to some external enclosure or SATA to USB adapter. Then connect the SATA to USB adapter to your netbook and start transferring files over.

3) Now it's been a long time since I've done this but IIRC, if both your netbook and PC both have gigabit NICs and if you have a CAT 6 cable, all you have to do is connect the PC and Netbook to one another via that CAT 6 cable. They'll show up as being on the same "network" and you can transfer files directly between the PC and netbook without issue.

3a) if both are NOT gigabit, then you can use a crossover cable instead. (gigabit controllers would auto switch to crossover using a regular patch cable)
