Need upgrading help

I’m going to try and upgrade a desk top for my son. I don’t want to spend money and have someone do it for me. I want to upgrade a Q6600 to an i5-2500. I know I need a new Mobo and ram. I want to keep everything else the same. I never did this before. Could some one explain step by step how to do this. I feel confident about disconnecting everything and removing the Mobo. I know I have to install the new processor, add the thermal paste, put the heat sink on then reconnect all the wires. Do I have to re-install windows 7? Do I have to save any files? I want to give my son this computer so I don’t care about losing junk I had on it. If you could break it down to me like your talking to a second grader, that would be great?

If everything works out, will I get a message or something that will tell me to update drivers click here?

Any advice on how to apply the thermal past?
 
In the Gen[H]ard FAQ, there's a ton of PC Building Guides linked. Those should be more than enough to tell how to replace a mobo, install a CPU and RAM, etc in a PC. You probably won't have to reinstall Windows 7 due to Windows 7 being pretty great at being transferred to and from different hardware.
