Im going to try and upgrade a desk top for my son. I dont want to spend money and have someone do it for me. I want to upgrade a Q6600 to an i5-2500. I know I need a new Mobo and ram. I want to keep everything else the same. I never did this before. Could some one explain step by step how to do this. I feel confident about disconnecting everything and removing the Mobo. I know I have to install the new processor, add the thermal paste, put the heat sink on then reconnect all the wires. Do I have to re-install windows 7? Do I have to save any files? I want to give my son this computer so I dont care about losing junk I had on it. If you could break it down to me like your talking to a second grader, that would be great?
If everything works out, will I get a message or something that will tell me to update drivers click here?
Any advice on how to apply the thermal past?
