Need to upgrade my 660, go 4GB 480 OC or 3GB 1060?

Ive started playing Deus Ex Mankind Divided and have found that my old 660 just cant keep up. Thus I have started looking into replacements for it but dont really want to be spending over $200. I can get an Asus 4GB 480X OC for $146 from jet.com or a 3GB 1060 for approx $50 more with one of my limiting factors being a max card size of less than 10". Should I go with the 480 or hold off until I can afford a 6GB 1060? Ive traditionally gone Nvidia for the last 20ish years.

My kid faced the same issue and went with the 480 just because he couldn't really see the difference between the cards when he tried them and the 480 came with CIV VI and a rebate card. Myself I don't care as long as I can get warranty service etc from whoever built it. He also bought a freesync monitor after purchase and has been happy enough.

I'm not into the brand wars, I'd buy whatever fit my wallet and came with stuff I wanted.

I went with the 3GB 1060 and it rocks.
Hooked it up to the new 1440 monitor and it runs like a demon.
Very good value and performance in my opinion.

In Paragon with max settings it runs 55fps steady on my 1440, whereas my old GT 640 would barely run it on minimum settings on my old 1080p monitor. The other stuff I play like DOTA 2 and TERA, it runs 60fps on max settings. I can't believe how well it works.

Um he is talking about a game that is actually demanding so a 1060 3gb will certainly not be running Deus Ex Mankind Divided "like a demon". At 1440p a 1060 3 gb would be in the low 20s for a game like that on max settings even with no real AA.

That sounds like I should go for the 6gb model instead then.

Well the 6gb is hardly any faster but it is certainly a better long term gpu if you plan to hold on to it while like you did the 660. Games have gotten WAY more demanding since that 660 came out so you will be turning down quite a few settings in demanding games even with a 1060 6gb if you want to maintain 60 fps. And you will find that cpu to be a limitation in a few games such as Mafia 3 and Watch Dogs.

What do you suggest then? I don't mind rebates.

There are some good deals on the RX 480 in the hot deals section if you want to go that route. Personally I would not go with any AMD card again after using a RX 480 for a few days. They have issues with some older games that even my 750 ti could max out. AMD also has more cpu overhead issues in some DX11 games. And in my experience the RX 480 could not even maintain 60 fps on just medium settings in games like Dishonored 2 and Mafia 3 which seems pretty pathetic.

I got a PNY GTX 1060 6GB for $247 from Compsource. IMO, get the 6gb model for the extra cost. A Zotac Mini 6gb is only $239 on the Egg last I checked

The bandwidth of the 3gb/ 6gb are the same, but the 6gb does have more Cuda cores. It's not necessarily faster but it is more powerful than the 3gb version.

The MSI 6GB card is 218 on jet.com after a coupon code and would be just short enough to fit in my case (9.54").

Edit: $208 with a rebate I found on amazon

I didn't even infer that the 1060 3Gb is the best solution for him.
Having not played the game, I simply stated my own findings and he can go from there.
He also didn't say he wanted to necessarily play at max settings.
Just trying to give the user more information.

That seems like a great deal- I'd be very tempted at that price.

I was actually able to push it below $200 using my wife's ibotta account.

Jealous- dooo eeet!

But like the other guy said- it probably won't play your Dues Ex on max settings. As long as you don't have unrealistic expectations, you will be a happy camper.

I dont expect my computer to play anything on max settings, im just hoping that the 2 seconds/frame goes away when I hit any area that has people moving.

That's a dealy-mcdeal!
Its this card https://jet.com/product/MSI-GTX-106...-Card-154-GH/dc2af768782140018286c796a0dccef1 which MSRP is $274.99
Selected no free return shipping dropped it to $250.78
Used the 15% off coupon dropped it to $220.78
Used my wifes ibotta account to get 5% back which "drops" it to $209.74
There is a $10 rebate which drops it to $199.74 <This was the wrong URL> I cant find the correct one at the moment but you can goto https://msi.4myrebate.com/Claim/OfferDetailsNewGrid/?Offercd=MSI-17194 instead

1060 3gb is slightly gimped compared to the 6gb as it had one less SM. I would not get it as it's slower than both the 480 and the 1060 6gb.

If you plan to do vr,get the 1060 6gb, if you don't have any inclination to try vr, get the 480 8gb if it's cheaper (usually is depending on deal of the day). 480 4gb might be ok if you don't plan to go over 1080p or do vr. I went 1060 6gb due to vr prowess, it was around $30 more than the 480 8gb and worth it for my uses (vr) but the 480 8gb might get you the same performance for a bit less money.

Hehe not the same as a 1060 but that deal on jet for the 470 for $125 ac ar is a pretty wicked deal considering it's maybe 10% slower than a 480 and a little more than the 1060.

Well, I have an 8GB RX480 and play older games without any performance issues whatsoever. It's certainly WAY faster than a 750 Ti. You either had a bad card or had some issue with your system's hardware/software.

As far as Dishonored 2 and Mafia 3, both the 8GB RX480 and the 6GB GTX 1060 are neck and neck. They both beat a 780 Ti in all resolutions much less the significantly slower 750 Ti:

Dishonored 2 - Windows 10 x64 - Ultra presets - DX11 - 1920x1080
50 FPS - GTX 1060 (6GB)
50 FPS - RX 480 (8GB)
43 FPS - GTX 780 Ti

Dishonored 2 - Windows 10 x64 - Ultra presets - DX11 - 2560x1440
37 FPS - GTX 1060 (6GB)
35 FPS - RX 480 (8GB)
33 FPS - GTX 780 Ti

Dishonored 2 - Windows 10 x64 - Ultra presets - DX11 - 3840x2160
29 FPS - GTX 1060 (6GB)
29 FPS - RX 480 (8GB)
26 FPS - GTX 780 Ti

Mafia III - High Quality Preset - Windows 10 x64 - DX11 - 1920x1080
42 FPS - GTX 1060 (6GB)
40 FPS - RX 480 (8GB)
32FPS - GTX 780 Ti

Mafia III - High Quality Preset - Windows 10 x64 - DX11 - 2560x1440
28 FPS - GTX 1060 (6GB)
27 FPS - RX 480 (8GB)
25 FPS - GTX 780 Ti

Mafia III - High Quality Preset - Windows 10 x64 - DX11 - 3840x2160
14 FPS - GTX 1060 (6GB)
14 FPS - RX 480 (8GB)
13 FPS - GTX 780 Ti

These numbers were taken from Guru3D's reviews of the two games. As you can see, the RX480 and GTX1060 perform almost identically to each other. So neither one has any real performance advantage over the other in these two games.

The 6GB 1060 is even able to mostly keep up with a 980 although the 980Ti is decently faster.

Get the 1060 6GB and overclock the hell out of it. :)

You must of had something wrong, having owned multiple 750ti there is no way its faster then an rx 480 at anything.

Quick update. This card had been able to take everything I've thrown at it much better than my 660 did.

That's good to hear, and not unexpected. Thanks for updating us all!

I have one in my daughter's gaming machine just put together Xmas time. It's a Evga 1060 6gig SC version and so far at 1440p is been great. Have it paired with a Skylake 6700k. Games runs awesome.

I agree with the choice of the 1060 as I'll be constructing a PC for a friend and will be using the 6gb model in his build as well.
