Well, after typing up a huge post, this stupid laptop clicked the link uptop, and I lost it all, here we go again.
My main laptop died, my desktop is older then most peoples cars (02 area). My laptop graphics card kicked the bucket, it flickers when I open the lid, but it smells a bit (burnt), and using HDMI/D-sub 15 doesnt do anything. Sound works, I can hear it load winjdows. Ill try and get it working to get stuff off it. But we will see. Its always overheated, and I think it finally just died.
) What will you be doing with this PC? Web Browsing, Excell invoicing, mild gaming (if I get time, 2nd boy born today), media storage (home videos etc)
2) What's your budget? Id like to keep it under 2k taxes in.
3) Where do you live? Alberta Canada
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? Everything. I know its not a valid answer, but I dont see me resusing anything from my sig. Maybe a mouse, but even thats 8 years old. So yeah. All parts, Case, CPU, GPU, Mobo, cooler, PSU, Ram, Keyboard, Mouse, display, DVD, speakers (ill get some stuff locally, or move my Logitech Z-5500s down.
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Nothing. Might reuse old lite-on CDRW to have 2 drives, and might use monitor for a bit till I can go an actually look at one. I like to see things like that for myself.
6) Will you be overclocking? Might a bit to benchmark, and for fun, but dont see me trying to run at 4ghz 24/7
7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have? Right now a 19 1280x1024, but will upgrade to something maybe 23ish
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC? In a week or so, once everyone is settled in, and I get the office cleaned out from the construction garbage.
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? Id like it to have wifi (or can go with a card), sata3 for my SSD (if it needs it, or gains from it). After that nothing else really.
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? Laptop died, so ill xfer Win 7 Home Prem 64.
3 options id consider. Get a new gaming type laptop, and use it. New PC with some media centre capability (wouldnt mind letting it push movies over to TV from office), or go SFF cube PC, and might just have it in the living room. I do have a Latitude D630 (posting from) which is my work laptop, so dont need a laptop, might just run it for the wife to do facebook etc upstairs, or get her an Ipad2.
Id like it to be able to game someone reasonably. I dont see my playing a ton of games with the 2nd boy now here. But I wouldnt mind playing skyrim a bit, and maybe some BF3 etc. I dont need all the eye candy on, but I dont wanna buy something I cant play any games on at all. Frustrate me too much. Good settings, maybe not all the AA etc.
Id also like this quiet. I like clean looking cases, like the hush 2. No idea on SFF cases, so throw me some suggestions. I was thinking something like a 2500k, Big cooler, or H50 maybe, Hush 2, SSD with 1TB backup for the wifes home videos/pictures etc, wifi accessories (like my old Asus had), or a card. Was gonna go with P8P67 pro a while back, not sure I need that anymore, or if there is still issues with it. But I dont mind spending some cash on quality components, id rather that then save 200, and have it crap out on components in a year or so. Last desktop is still going after being built in 02, but pretty slow now a days.
Anyway, some help would be great guys. I wont be posting for a bit, so hope I answered all questions. Back to the hospital, just picking stuff up for the wife, and noticed laptop died when I tried to check email.
Thanks, Jason
