I think he upping to quads :D

As hinted to in the DC/FS area ... I am upping some of my boxes to quads.

I have two q6600 now - both were oem and run great not sure what vid was think 1.2** something..

I got on in the other day - OEM Q6600 G0 SLACR VID 1.325

I could not get it over 2.7....I tried and tried . I have sent it back.

Did I just get a bad one?

Next time, Do I need to get the retail version??

Reading the comments on Newegg, some of the OEM's have problems overclocking, but i dont see any of that on the retail products .... Any truth to that ....???

Please help .......
 
What stepping was it ?.

The B3 runs at 105 watts and does not overclock very well. Sub 3.00 Ghz.
The G0 runs at 95 watts and tends to overclock +3.00 Ghz.
It makes a lot of a difference to your final speed.

1.325 VID is a bit high and often a sign of a dud one.

The better question is what MB did you put it in. B3's will go 3.2+ on an P35 board (GA-P35-DS3L) but I found a lot of P965 chips that will not O/C well with a quad

Running In Abit IB9.

I have two systems already running Q6600 @ 3.0GHz .. so I know the combo works.

Out of the 4 I have had - 2 were low VID to were High ... all were OEM .......

If I buy the retail version, do I have a better chance of getting a lover VID ????
 
Actually, it's a crapshoot if you got a good one or a dud. Also, the newer G0 seems to overclock less well than the earlier ones. Mine come from the day the Q6600 got lowered to 266$ (july 22nd 2007) and it overclock great.

My P965-DS3 did just fine with a G0. 3.51Ghz with air cooling.

It all comes down to luck of the draw. My first one hit 3.6Ghz and the second did 3.51 and both are G0's. One thing you have to remember about the quads is the amount of voltage you have to put into them depending on the board. My P35 and P965 Gigabyte boards have horrible vdroop with quads. To get 1.4v under full load with the Q6600's I have to set it to 1.51-1.52v in the BIOS.

I tried all the way to 1.6 and could not get over 2.7 .....

I am hoping that a retain CPU will do better then the OEM ones

The one at 3.6 was a retail and the one at 3.51 is an OEM. There is another retail on the way that I've been waiting and waiting on but should finally be here tomorrow instead of Saturday like it was supposed to be. I'll hopefully see how it does tomorrow.

 
Explain to me why you would send back a perfectly working Quad for one that overclocks? I understand that you want to OC it, but if it doesn't OC, that doesn't warrant a return. It still works at its rated speed.
 
I'll let you know. I have 2 quads on their way. One from an [H]'er and one from Microcenter. One is OEM and the other retail.

You are correct. Not going to try and argue with you on that one.
But if I can have one that does 3000+ PPD and one does 2100 + PPD ..... for the same money... which would you go with?
 
If you want the 3k PPD, then pay for the higher clocked processor. It just is annoying that processors get sent back becuase they won't overclock to 3 GHz. Then that company has to test it or send it back to my company for testing just to verify that it is actually working. Now, the CPU has been in a system so it cannot be sold as new, and you have to sell it as used or junk it. Just eats away at the profit and stock overtime.

This doesn't affect everyone, I just specifically feel it in my own pocket book. :(
 
Well with the Quad Core 45nm's around the corner, I've decided to hold off buying a 2nd Q6600. My goal is to replace my E6600 and build a new machine with the 45nm quad. Which will put 3 boxes in production, plus my ps3 and I will retire my p4 to multimedia server duty. This should put me at 13k PPD or there about when it is all done and said. :)

P.S. the Quad 45nm's have huge potential for OC'n... many people have seen 5ghz with the dual core 45nm so I would expect 4-4.5ghz with a quad 45nm, which is a nice jump from the Q6600 which averaged 3-3.5ghz.

I've also seen plenty of people struggling to reach 4Ghz with the Wolfdales. At this point, I wouldn't count on any certainty in regards to overclocking the 45nm quads until they have been out in the wild for a while. Using the smaller process usually equates to lower power usage and lower heat but does not always equal great overclocking ability. I might eventually grab one of the 45nm quads but it won't be until the prices on them drop and their overclockability is known.

 
Aren't the new 45nm priced at or below Q6600's? I was reading 239 insome article if I recall as an MSRP.

I guess we will see once they hit mainstream, but at that price it would be hard not to chose it over a Q6600, but then again when they arrive we might see Q6600's drop down to 100-150.
 
No, the Q6600 will drop to 224$ in april and the Q9300 take the spot at 266$.
