First the specs...

CPU: i7 930
MB: MSI Big Bang-XPower
RAM: Kingston HyperX 6Gb
GPU: Galaxy GTX460 (x2 SLI)
PSU: Corsair CMPSU-1000HX
Case: Cooler Master CM690 II
HDD: WD WD1002FAEX (x2 RAID 1)
Cooler: Megahalems Rev.B (w/ a CM 12cm fan)

I am building this system for my future step brother. I picked these parts because I have read a lot about there stability and ease of OCing with these components. However, none of the OCing features seem to be working. BIOS is up-to-date. All drivers are the latest. The system went through a 4 hour burn in test with Prime95 and Furmark without issue. I tried using the OC Genie feature but when it reboots It keeps saying that the OC failed and wants to reset the BIOS setting back to stock. After trying that a few times I disabled OC Genie and tried some of the predefined OC settings within the GUI based OC tool from MSI. That promptly BSODs and I have to reboot.

Any ideas!? Thanks.

Side note: I have been building PCs for over 14 years but am fairly new to OCing. You don't have to dumb your explanations down. I just need some place to start figuring out what the problem might be. Thanks.

Simple, you may have gotten an i7 930 that doesn't want to overclock.

If the auto-overclocking doesn't work, that is 95%+ the reason. Sure, could be a marginal powersupply putting out poor DC, a faulty motherboard, RAM that is marginal in that system (which means it won't overclock since you are lucky you got it to work at all), etc...

Might be as simple as the RAM, make sure it is listed as compatible with that motherboard. Try another power supply. If you eliminate everything as "good", then the processor won't overclock. It happens, just like people end up getting DOA processors every now and again. But, then again, you did buy a processor that would work at stock speeds and it does. Just because it won't overclock doesn't mean there is anything wrong with it, you just got an non-overclockable CPU.

the auto OC tool on gigabyte boards are pretty terrible and don't usually run correctly from what I've read, which is the case with most manufacturer's auto OC tools (they take all the fun out of it any way, lol).

I'd take a quick look at some of the overclocking guides that Tom's Hardware is littered with, they're normally pretty good for beginners.

Actually, my personal system has a Gigabit board in it and the OC util for that OC'd my CPU without any problems. Been running strong for over a year now.

I will checkout the guides both here on [H] and back on Tom's. I've just read several reviews about how the OC Genie on these MSI boards really rock and work almost like magic. Not the case so far.

Thanks.

OK. I set the timings for the ram to 7-8-7-20. Then ditched the "genie" and the GUI and went straight to the BIOS. Am currently at 3.5Ghz (175 cpu clock and 20x mul). Ran P95 for 2+ hours with no issues. Just need to dig around the BIOS to find the other fields I need to take it to 4Ghz. Oh, I also disabled the "turbo" feature. Thanks.

Also, if anyone has any additional advice or input it is welcome. Thanks.
