I am looking for some way of extracting some data from an old hard drive of mine. I was looking for some external setup to do this. I was wondering if ya could shed some insight on this subject. I had found some hot swap kits from where they swap data with but I am not sure if this would work or not cause I think the old drive may still have the operating system installed on it. If now how would I get that data off if it dont and also if it does.

Well you would need to let us know what interface the hdd has.
If a hdd has an operating system on it and you want to recover data, yes, you can hook it up and retrieve/transfer the data.

It may be easier to just do all of this internally.
If it's a parallel ATA drive, hook up the ide cable and set it to "cable select" and it should appear in "My Computer."
If it's a SATA drive, do the same thing as stated above.

Oh yea sorry its a ATA 300. I was wanting to do external so just in case I had any more drives to look at I could just plug it up and not have to worry about shutting down the rig and the installing the drive just to go back a few minutes later and take it back out.

Just get a 3.5" external case. Make sure the internal interface matches your drive (you said SATA), get USB for the external connection, and plug away. These cases usually make the drives kinda toasty if run for a coupla hours at a time. If you're going to do that, look for one with a fan.
