Need some help before pronouncing DOA

Ok...I need some verification before I pronounce a new motherboard DOA. I'm a little frustrated so I am just wanting to make sure I haven't skipped over anything.

Bought a new system over the past week and I just got all the hardware in yesterday. Well, I got around to hooking everything up, powered up, and then nothing. So, I then reset the BIOS and tried again, nothing. I then pulled everything off except RAM, CPU, and the front panel stuff. Again, nothing. Pulled the ram, dead again. Pulled the CPU, still nothing. No beeps, or anything. Unable to power down via the front panel button on all cases (had to use the PSU switch on the back). Also pulled the board off the tray and layed it on a piece of cardboard to make sure I wasn't grounding out. And to top it off, reseated the RAM and CPU, nada. Am I missing anything; any more ideas? Or, should I just call this a RMA special? And if so, would it be just the motherboard or motherbaord and CPU? I figuring just the motherboard as it should should have at least beeped at me with the CPU removed.

Asus M2A-VM (onbaord video)
AMD X2 5600+
2gig G.Skill ram

Any help would be appreciated...

I cant think of anything right off, some Gskill requires high voltage but i doubt you have the super hot OCing ram in that board. Bet you tired with just one stick too.

If I did all that and was pretty sure the ram and cpu were OK, I too would suspect a dead board. the lack of any kind of beeps, not even error beep codes, pretty much seals it.

Well, correct me if I am wrong, but shouldn't the motherboard beep if the CPU and RAM are not present?

Not sure about the cpu, newer boards should not even try to power up according the the Intel Voltage Regulator specs. With ram not in it should be beeping like crazy. However I have not messed with an AMD board in over 3 years so I dont know squat. Hmm actually I did build a amd based workstation for CAD but had no problems so never needed to investigate.

Just a thought,

But do you have both PSU power adapters plugged into the system board? With only the 24pin plugged into the system board this would cause similar symptoms.

Have you checked the voltage on the back of your PSU? It should be set to 110 not 220V - This is just a thought as I remember I had a build a while ago that would just restart continuously until I realized that it was set to the wrong voltage - although yours doesn't seem to even do that.

Although I think you're right that your mobo looks to be DOA although you should try other peoples suggestions just in case and if not... oh well you spent like another 10 minutes and just call ASUS to get it all sorted out.

regnak, your a life saver. That was exactly the problem and I didn't didn't even think to look at it, which is one of the reasons I posted this. Damn, do I feel like a goofball. Much appreciation on that one...:D

Haha glad I could help out, I know that one from experience too :D
