Need some [H]orde advice...

Okay.. so I've been having pretty good luck with the diskless client on lately, but I've finally been able to upgrade some of the hardware in my 4400+ boxen.

I'm wondering what the absolute best configuration (production wise) would be for this machine... here are the specs..

AMD 4400+
Asus A8N-Sli Deluxe
4x512m ram
POS Nvidia pci video card of some sort....
120g WD Cavair HD
CD/DVD RW
Thermaltake Purepower 500w PSU
Freezer 7 Pro

Here's my problem. This machine is quite a bit nicer "spec wise" than my current main box, and I would like to replace my rig with this one... I will be upgrading the video card before too long, and once that is done I want to use it as my main machine.

Question is, what OS/client configuration should I go with? Am I going to kill my production if I use this as a dual purpose machine as opposed to a dedicated folder?

I'm pretty familiar with Ubuntu, I use it daily, and I have no problem with XP either. I know there are some here that really like Suse... I have never used it other than playing around with it in VM a few years ago, but I am willing to learn, as long as it's a stable daily OS that won't make me want to kill myself...

Any help/advice is appreciated in advance

I've run the diskless or windows on my boxen. From what I've read you will get about the same production running a full linux distro as the diskless. Any major drop will come from what you ask the machine to do.

You will see a drop going to windows. maybe 10% depending.

If you don't want to smash you head into the wall when you run linux (thats me) do that and keep your production up.

I only see a 100-150PPD drop between my diskless and windows clients on my rigs ...

I would see if I could locate a dual core Cpu for that combo (4200-4600, or opteron) and run the Smp under Ubuntu or Suse, and or windows.
Or run 2 standard client on a 3600 X2 thru 4000 X2.

I have a 4400+ in the system already... and that is a dual core

I think I'll probably just give Suse a shot and see how it goes. If worse comes to worse I'll just stick with XP and hope for the best.

I have a 4000+ and it's an X2. I also have it running 3.0 instead of 2.1 which helps out a bit for folding.

It's the OS of choice on all my boxen! ...mostly because I used Redhat for years, hence Fedora's always just been easier for me to go with.

I still have an XP1700+ going as well as a P3 1Ghz so don't feel bad. I just retired (at least temporarily) a P3 800 as I needed the case it was in for my latest quad. I don't have any type of setup to be able to run boxen nekkid in my apartment. All the space in my computer area has been used up for the most part and I don't have a place in my bedroom or closet for naked boxen. Until my son starts to behave at school all the time so I can move his computer into his room, I will be out of room for additional computers in the living room.
