so im fixing up someones laptop for them. its an older laptop so im trying to get it as fast as possible. unfortunately i dont have a copy of windows so i couldn't reformat the hdd, but i did scan it with Malware anti-bytes, spybot, super anti spyware, and Ccleaner three times each (found new stuff the first two times o_O lol). I bought more ram to upgrade it from 512 mb to 2 gigs. the computer has an AMD Turion 64 running at 1.99 Ghz.

is there anything else ive skipped over to give it more speed? also what anti virus should i use for it. right now i have Avira installed on the comp but i was wondering if there is something better.
 
I use MSE for my AntiVirus.. its light & free & updated regularly.. what more could you want.
 
Sheet, I use Avast free edition AND MSE.

Whats the fastest processor the laptop can handle? They are probably cheap now.
What speed hard drive is in it? If 5400 RPM, a 7200 RPM, larger drive will be significantly faster.
 
well because i dont have a copy of windows for it, new hdd is out. the comp can take a dual core but i htink it would be a waste of money because of what it will be used for. the only thing i didnt like about avast compared to avira, it slowed the computer down a lot. with avira it runs a lot faster. also, windows keeps telling me that the software didn't pass the "authentic test" so MSE is out. ive tried everything to get it active and nothing works. plus cause my friend doesn't have the windows CD he doesn't know where the key is.

so it looks like all the bases are covered. when the ram arrives ill install and return the lappy. thanks guys

Not necessarily: If you have a internal to external HDD adapter, you can hook up the new drive to that adapter. And then the adapter to the laptop. Then do the following:
- Run Acronis True Image or some other imaging program to image the old drive to the new drive
- Shut down the laptop, remove the old drive, install the new drive, and boot.
- Done.

Google, download, and use Magic Jellybean finder to find the serial key for the Windows OS on that laptop.
