I am looking to upgrade my 5+ year old android smartphone for a new(er) one that doesn't have a huge screen like most phones do. I want to be able to fit it in my pockets comfortably and my budget is under $175. Any recommendations?

Small is relative. What is the maximum length and width of the device that you can live with?

Please add which carrier you plan on using the phone with. Certain phones work only with certain carriers. (Verizon's CDMA vs T-mobile's GSM)

I have been using a pay as you go plan with H20 for the past 5 years or so and would like to continue using this service. My phone is Moto E which I think has a 4.5 inch screen so something under 5.5 inches is preferable.

Ok, so it's GSM service provided through AT&T network. He would probably have to go budget route and get a used, like Mike did a while back..

Problem with smaller phones is they're usually low end and will be very limited capability. I had(have) a small LG transpyre(Verizon cdma) and after a few updates, most essential apps run uber slow and crash due to lack of resources. All those "performance improvement" updates do a number on the apps, making them unsuitable for budget resource oriented device.

Taco would suggest bigger pockets.

Please specify your desired maximum phone size, not screen size. Bezels have gotten smaller, so a modern phone with a 5.5" screen may be smaller than an older one with a 4.5" one.

I see. I didn't realize all phones had big screens now. On the H20 site, they have a Nokia 4.2 which is on my budget but I could order it elsewhere like amazon. Is that a bad phone ?

Pendragon : one of these 2? https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-SM-A015M-Display-Unlocked-International/dp/B084VB5XBD/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=samsung+A01&qid=1590438028&sr=8-3&th=1

I assume H20 is not a CDMA carrier but GSM like Taco mentioned.

Yeah, a Pixel 3a or even a normal Pixel 2 if they're still around.
I found the Pixel 2 to be an ideal size, although the bezels were excessively large for a phone that recent.

The price should come down on the 3a as the 4a is coming in a month. I would increase your budget and just get the 3a period.
