first of all thanks for taking the time to read my question......i have a q6600 g0 revision...and i overclocked my cpu for the 1st time today...i was reading a lot about that on this forum...and here are my questions....my pc spec are on my sign....ok i went to the bios to the memory and fsb settings and set that to unlinked then i increased the fsb to 1156 mhz that gave me the speed of 2.6 ghz, now the thing is that im using the stock HSF from intel, i dont want to overclock that much i just wanted a little push.....
i monitor my pc with everest ultimate on my 2nd monitor

my idle temps are:
cpu: 41
core/1/2/3/4: 45/45/42/42
cpu core voltage: 1.21 v

my load temps under call of duty 4 are:
cpu: 51
core/1/2/3/4: 59/59/54/54
cpu core voltage: 1.21 v

now when i try the small fft's on prime 95 the temps raise up fast on my 1st 2 cores until the reach the 70 celsius and the cores 3 and 4 stay between 64 and 68, when my temps where that high i just stopped the test and went into my games, that's how i use my pc and also to backup dvd and bluray movies, and i noticed that my temps stay between 55 to 59 in all cores....i dont want to buy another heatsink i want to stay with what i have now......if im gonna be realistic
im not gonna use the 4 cores at a 100% all the time with the games or applications i use, i also play crysis and my temps are fine, so could i stay like im now on 2.6 ghz without changing anything on my system, i think i have good ventilation with antec 900 case...
any suggestions ? and by the way my system is completley stable while booting and playing...thanks for your opinions

you are well under any temps or voltages that could be considered alarming.

I would not even start to worry until core temps were above 75C (and really even then you would have a lot of headroom and you cannot burn up the chip. Somewhere around 100C the cpu will put out an "I am too hot signal" and about 15C above that it will thermal trip, shutdown to prevent damage, and after cooling off probally be just fine. Not something we would want to test however. )

Those chips can take voltages up to 1.4V without worry and I am being conservative. Yours seems to run great with lower voltage so I (imo personally) would put a super conservative limit of about 1.35V on cpu voltage maybe 1.375 if I was close to an OC goal and that extra .025 would get me there stable. Per Intel datasheet 1.55V is the absolute maximum Vcore but again, not something we wish to test.

So if you are happy and the machine is working fine and doing what you want, you are golden, nothing is stressed. If you wish a little more Vcore and watch the temps as you raise the FSB and see if you can get to 3.0GHz with load temps under 80C and as you mentioned even games will not stress all 4 cores at once. Your call, you have a little more room to play if you like, but if it is not broke, dont fix it ;) Seeing if you can OC your video card a little bit would probally be more worthwhile for your gaming experience than pushing the cpu/motherboard harder.

I have run a Q6600 with the stock HS at 3.2GHz under orthos load stable as a rock. Fan was set to run at 100% all the time. I needed 1.325V of Vcore and temps under load (two copies of orthos - all 4 cores stressed) were mid 80s. After 8 hours of burn in for a customer I backed off to 333MHz FSB x 9 for 2.99GHz (3GHz) with a memory mulitplier of 1.2 (do not think you need that with your Nvida board as you can set memory speed independent of cpu FSB ) running the memory at 800MHz worked great. and I could put the fan on auto. It still ran fairly fast during load testing but was quieter than 100% and doing normal things it was pretty quiet overall. Your Mileage May Vary.

thanks for your recommendations...i have some questions though.....how do i get the heatsink fan to run at 100% all the time ( could this damage my fan ? ), when you say check the temps under load to be under 80 Celsius, you mean check them while im gaming,or you mean all the cores working at 100% on stress programs like prime95 ( small ftt's test ) or you mean orthos ( dont know how to use it ).....or it doesnt matter which one ? wouldnt be too risky to go to 3.0 ghz on stock heatsink..though im thinking that if i have my fan working at full speed all the time it could decrease temps dramaticlly...what do you suggest ? i havent checked if i actually see any differences between running at 2.4 ghz or 2.6 ghz..im gonna need to do some benchmarks to see whats up......and finally how should i set my ram, its unlinked from the fsb now, should i leave it like that or you need more info about timings and settings on ram.....THANKS A LOT FOR YOUR HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

No, running on manual setting @ 100% it will not damage the HSF. To set it to manual get into bios and into monitor system. Then set the CPU fan to manual or “smart fan off” (cant remember exactly what the options is). Then set it to 100%. What I did was, I set it to 80% then use speedfan so adjust to 100 when gaming or whatever you do. Hope I helped.
