I am working on reformatting my brothers computer because when it would load it kept saying OS error.... so i stuck in my xp disc and swiped the HD but now all of his data on his second hard drive is in limbo. every time i try to access it, windows says i need to reformat it. i don't want to do that!! all of his pictures, music etc is on there. any suggestions??

Use a Linux live CD like Knoppix. Boot into into the Knoopix Live CD, find your bro's hard drive and copy all the data into an external or that primary drive.

never really used Linux what am i in for?

It's different to say the least. But keep an open mind, think logically, google if you can't figure out something and no you do not need to install Linux. A LiveCD will load entirely into RAM, requiring no install whatsoever.
