I have an older desktop im pretty limited on upgrading, I dont have the money to swap out the motherboard so wondering if there is any cpu upgrade or video card that will help..

I play some light gaming on the pc... wow. my flight sim.... I also do video editing, and website design...

Asus P755D-E pro
intel i5 650
8 gig 1333 ram
(2) Gtx 460's

What PSU do you have?
What games are you playing?
What case?
What's the resolution of your monitor?

Not the best of cases but it should do. Please find out which Thermaltake 850W PSU you have as TT do have quite a few shitty 850W PSUs out there but they also have good 850W PSUs as well.

Hmm, unfortunately that's one of TT's crappy PSU models. I would recommend getting a new PSU like this one to avoid any potential issues.

Once you get the new PSU, if you are willing to buy used, look for the Core i5 750 from the FS/FT subforum. GPU wise, if you have the GTX 460 1GB SLI setup, then you should be looking at the GTX 660 2GB.

would an i7 or xenon benefit any?

If you're doing a ton of video editing, yes the i7 8xx would be a good choice if you can find it for a good used price. As for Xeon, I'd avoid it due to potential compatibility issues.

okay thanks! hopefully this will get me by for a while until I can build a new system...

off topic in games using the nvidia sli meter how can I tell which is my bottleneck gpu/cpu? and what is the best setting to use for physicx ? cpu or gpu

Just make sure to get the CPU used as paying the new price for it is not a good idea at all.

You're better off asking that question over in the Video Cards subforum.

GPU since you run Nvidia cards.

Why are you upgrading anyways? Is something slowing down?

My i7 laptop with a gtx 560m seems to play better, and I don't want to use my laptop as an everyday machine since it is for my business.... just want to get a little better performance out of this desktop... just feels "sluggish" esp video encoding and capturing...

No, if you have Nvidia cards then use them for PhysX. AMD cards need to use CPU for PhysX.

Not really, but set it to the second GPU.

I find it kind of hard to believe that a SLI'd 460 setup with an i5 650 feels sluggish next to a 560m... I'm rocking an i7 870 w/ 470 GTX and when I upgraded to a 570 GTX I didn't really notice that much of a performance increase.

How long has Windows been installed on that Desktop? Are you sure it's "clean" of any infestation?

Do what Danny suggest, try to find an i7 8xx CPU for the low-low in the FS/FT forums, eBay or Craigslist. Sure someone might be upgrading to something newer.

I don't.

The i5 650 is a dual-core with turbo boost. Most games these days can take advantage of more cores, especially with SLI sucking-down additional processing power.

Also, Clarksdale has the worst integrated memory controller Intel has ever cursed the world with, so the quad core upgrade will also improve I/O performance (a bottleneck for SLI)

Without knowing what processor is in that laptop, I still find it difficult to believe.
