My current system is:

Phenom 2 945 @3.1ghz
4gigs DDR3
2 optical drives
2 hard drives
1 SSD
ATI 4850

It's been running fine on my 450 Watt Corsair power supply. I just bought a ATI 5870 and was wondering if a new power supply is needed. Thing is the 5870 is one of the overclocked versions which makes me wonder how much more power I need. Would my current power supply be able to handle all of this or do I need a 550 or 650 Watt?

Do you have the 125W or 95W version of the Phenom II 945?

95 Watt version and it's slightly overclocked to 3.1 ghz.

Here is the card I just bought:

and here is the power supply I currently have which is about 2 years old:

It says a 500Watt or greater power supply is required on the spec sheet for that video card but I'm wondering how true that is.

Hmmm:
95W - Phenom II 945
235W - HD 5870

330W for just the CPU and GPU alone.

The Corsair 450VX only has 396W on the +12V rail which means that it leaves you with only 66W for the 2 hard drives, motherboard, and 2 optical drives. So yeah, I recommend a larger PSU. Something like this should be just fine:
$100 - Corsair 650TX 650W PSU
$100 - XFX P1-650X-CAG9 650W Modular PSU

I ended up getting the 650 Watt Corsair. If I decided to use an SLI setup in the future, would that power supply be able to handle it?

HD 5870 Crossfire? Not a good idea with the 650TX. I would go with the Corsair 850TX for HD 5870 Crossfire for a little leeway.

It is do-able but you are really pushing the TX650. As long as you don't run too much other stuff you should be able to scrape by.
