yes i am trying to fix my older pc
core 2 duo, 4 gigs ram, 550 watt psu , 9600gt.. for my friend.
At the current state it has been freezing to bluescreen alot , opening programs and always verifying steam games. Just was wondering anyone know any programs that tell you what software/hardware is faulting out or dying.. Getting aggravated reinstalling windows for everything to work good for about ~2 weeks then back to freezing/bluescreen/stalling!
I just don't wanna start buying part's and it's not the right one it should be . So i am willing to try anything to get this back up for a friend so we can play BFBC2/WOW/ ect.

Sorry if this isn't in the right section as i currently don't know where to post this at!

Please help if you can! :D

Maybe the harddrive is bad or overheating, does the case has good ventilation blowing through the case and the HD?

Maybe your video card is overheating?

I never get a blue screen, but my windows keep freezing up, when I touch my HD, they were burning hot. Then I put it in HD were the fan was blowing and it keep it nice and cool and no more freezing up.

yes SmartDriver the HDD is cool its in-front of a nice size fan infront of the case. so it stays cool. think its a 60mm fan in front casing that it sits behind getting cool , but the HDD is like 3 1/2 years old and not as reliable as SSD's are but they are heck of alot cheaper atm :D But i am downloading the UBCD to test some of the stuff before confirming :D But yes it could be going bad. i checked for bad sectors but it didnt come back bad said everything was running fine. maybe its the stress that kills it maybe idk im not a computer expert or near it.

Can you be more specific on the parts in your computer?

Core Duo 2, Ghz? Model?
PSU model?
Brand 9800GT?
XP, Vista? Windows 7?

So when he starts the computer it freezing how long after he starts steam? 10mins, 1 hours?

Be a bit detailed or we'll just be playing the guessing game all over again.

Windows 7 x64 ult.
Core 2 Duo E4500 2.20ghz
foxconn 9600gt 512mb
Dynex 550 watt psu
System model 945gct-m

i think thats about all i know about it

Well it's my PC i am letting him use but i don't use it much but when i do i notice that steam games keep freezing and kicking me off games like loading maps such as in BFBC2-TF2-L4D2 Ect even occasionally WOW & when it does kick us off attempting repairs/fixes/rigging. we always have to verify intregrity/repairs to games to get it working then that takes 45min-5 hours to do everything then to try it agian and nothing. And now i am experiencing constant freeze up from programs and stuff. like it stalls for 5 minutes then BSOD rolls upon us to just shoot down our hopes! Everything is sturdy and plugged in just trying to troubleshoot bad HDD or Bad Mobo? Not sure.

I'd say damage from a really shitty power supply is the more likely scenario. That Dynex PSU is a total piece of shit and should be replaced even if wasn't the cause of your current issues.

I agree completely, this my first thought reading the OP.

lol yeah but why replace something that isn't the issue , working fine even its a P.O.S! But yeah soon im going to buy something better maybe ... Il prolly just spend money upgrading new stuff slowly and knock out 1 thing at a time till it goes bye bye i suppose unless someone has a better idea of how to pin point the Problem and i tried UBCD.

Because that something has a high chance of causing issues with or killing hardware. So even if you were to upgrade or even attempt to fix that PC, the first thing to be replaced has to be that PSU. There's no question or doubt about it.

Your right bud , But as of right now would prolly be cheaper to find a new mobo/HDD/Psu as it could possibly be those 3 as of now or should i just simplify it and do PSU/Motherboard? then HDD.?

None of the above. First go with a new PSU. After that, find out which part is causing the issue. The link I gave you earlier should be more than enough info and advice for you how to find the issues.

If you still want to do an upgrade without diagnosing your issues, then you're looking at a new PSU first and then a new CPU + mobo + RAM as the CPU + mobo + RAM you have now can't be used current generation hardware. Then a case + GPU upgrade. And finally a hard drive upgrade after that.

well shit , to much Bullshit for me to deal with as my other friend the Computer-Tech guy isn't here and gone for a while . So from what u stated i might as well look for another PC with Good Part's and not garbage crap (Talking about my psu)! I seen some good deals for i7 2500 & 2600k cpu's! Well guess thanks for help and i did do a couple test's and they didn't revile nothing so i don't understand.

When you say the PSU is working, do you mean it powers up the system? I've seen it in the past where a PSU will power up the system and then cause all kinds of problems after a short time as it doesn't actually provide enough power, or enough stable power.

For the issues you're having, and the brand/model of PSU you have, the PSU would be my first port of call, as Danny and others have already stated. The problem is that if you upgrade your other stuff and it does turn out to be the PSU then it will likely kill the new stuff as well, also most probably voiding any warranties.

HAHA Cobalt32 all this stuff lost warranties like year ago but alrighty that's like alot of people saying PSU first has to go before upgrading anything thanks you'll .guess i gotta upgrade PSU>motherboard>Hard-drive in that order? cause i seen cheap boards for the system for like 20-30$

What I'm saying is that if you upgrade the motherboard first and the PSU kills it then the new motherboard warranty will be void. That's assuming you're purchasing a new mobo :)

You won't know what's the problem if you don't have a backup computer to test each item one-by-one. That's the only best way to test it. You don't have another computer that you can unplug and use the old computer for a while with another PSU.

Like I had a P4 with 430W Antec PSU that stopped working.so I just took a P3 300W and used it, worked perfect. And that 300PSU was sitting outside for about 2-4 years, just covered with a tarp in a box and with some more boxes on top of it.

Na man , PSU first i don't wanna fry new shit. Might go to frys though haha!
