I've gotten a Allied Telesys 9000/24 Gigabit Layer 2 switch to play with, but Ive hit a dead end.

My problem is that connecting it to my network doesn't allow me to connect to the web interface, as the hardware isn't given an IP address.

I suspect is it because the former owner didn't reset it.

The switch does have a Serial Port, I've got no means of connecting it, as all my Serial Cables doesn't fit.

So the only way is the web interface...
Could I take my Linux PC and connect it to the switch with a cable (does it have to be crossover, when the switch have auto MDx?) and then scan the switch for any interface's with IP's and if so, what utilities can scan for said IP?

or is the only way to find a Serial Cable that fits?

Install wireshark and conect your PC's NIC to it. Run wireshark and watch the IPs recorded for any not recognized.

The serial port on your switch is a female RS-232 connector, I assumed that both end of your serial cable is the same as the serial port on your switch (female)? If so, you can cut your cable, rewire/solder it to a RS-232 male connector - which is not impossible to obtain one.

I'll give Wireshark a tryk tommorow.

The serial port on the switch is male, so I should be able to get a genderchanger yes...

Almost every switch and server on earth has a male serial port. I would find it quite odd that you do not have the correct cable.

If im not mistaken Allied Telesis uses a straight cable. So a 1:1 gender changer should be all you need if you have a straight RS232 cable.

If the previous owner didnt change its settings properly then the username is manager and password is friend.

You should also during hardboot be able to press key S (if im not mistaken, its written during boot for a second or two) to stop the regular boot and boot into an empty configuration from where you can overwrite the current configuration and then reboot it again to have factory defaults.

You have great docs available at:
