need help with a codec

to make a long story short, computer a plays a .wav file. computer b will not. i really need computer b to play this file.

i think i have narrowed the needed codec down to "ADPCM # 125" (windows media player told me this). however, i cannot find the codec anywhere on the 'net.

ive downloaded all kinds of codec packs, many different types of audio players, converting the file to another format and nothing works. i even found a tutorial that said adpcm #125 is a built in windows codec and to simply reinstall it. i followed the tutorial to the letter and it didn't work either.

so it hit me: computer a has the codec; why not just copy and paste the codec to computer b.

my question is: will this work? will simply copying over the codec to machine b work?

I have never heard of needing a codec to play a wav file. How did you find out what codec you needed?

^ me either. my friend is a medical transcriptionist and the doctor she works for emails her the files. what he uses to record his voice, i dont know. they are .wav, but use this weird codec.

every player i tried on machine b either says error, error: missing codec, or in the case of WMP, it tells me the exact codec that is missing.

update: on machine a, under the installed codecs, sure enough is: sanyo adpcm 125. i have hunted for hours for this codec on the 'net and have pretty much given up.

It looks like a compression codec used by transcription software. try downloading this http://www.nch.com.au/scribe/ and see if it can play or convert the wav file. It looks like it supports a variety of different codecs.

Just a thought but why not copy the codec from one machine to the other?

lol BillR, ive asked a couple of times if copying it over will work :D

im going to test it as soon as i can get to machine a.

thanks for the link, magnetik, im going to try that palyer too.

one more thing: where are codecs located at? somewhere in the windows folder i assume?

Since you know the file name use windows "search" feature. I'd guess the "system32"
folder, but every program is different. The other trick will be to make the copy be "seen". Some programs allow you to point to the file, other specify a location.

Luck ;)

thanks to everyone who has tried to help

magnetik, the program you suggested came back with a guess what? missing codec error, lol.

BillR, i am unale to find the codec on the computer. i know its installed. control panel>sound and audio devices>hardware tab>audio codecs>properties>properties tab>and there it is listed, "sanyo adpcm 125." but a search of the machine shows nothing. so, im back at square one.

i would greatly appreciate any other help or ideas.

thanks again to everyone that tried to help

i got it! i found a program from sanyo that had the codec in it. woot.

Hey!

I've just encountered the same problem with the Sanyo ADPCM 125. When i try to play the WAV files i get the error message Codec missing.

What was the solution to this? Where was the codec found?

Thanks
