Need help with 5830

I recently purchase a XFX Radeon HD 5830 as an upgrade for my 3 year old Diamond Radeon HD 3850. It was in my price range and I like having the lifetime warranty for it. The issue I am having is installing it.

When I put the new card in it would not post, but when I remove my creative sound card and clear the cmos it will boot. But here is the kicker when I reboot the PC will not post again unless I clear the cmos. Now I am leaning towards the power supply but I don't want to rule out a possible bios issue and would like some input from yall to see what yall think it is. I have a support ticket in with both ECS and XFX but you know how long it usually takes tech support to respond.

Specs:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ am2 65w (not overclocked at the moment)
ECS KA3 MVP (1.1e bios)
DIAMOND Viper 3850PE3256SB Radeon HD 3850 256MB
A-DATA 2GB (2 x 1GB)
A-DATA 4GB (2 x 2GB)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250gb
SeaSonic SS-500ES 500W
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Pro (Is not currently in PC)

All of this is 3 years old. My Graphics card was showing its age as it did freak out on me a few times so I figure its was time to upgrade and I want to get near the top as I could with the budget I have. I hate to have to buy a new power supply but if I have to I will since I would like to use my $267 card.

Thanx in advance

My guess would be that it is not a power supply problem. Needing to clear the CMOS shows a motherboard/BIOS problem. My bet would be that your motherboard is having either compatibility problems, or is starting to go bad. I take it the system boots fine w/ the XFI card in if the 5830 is not?

ya I can boot if after I clear the cmos just bought another power supply so I ruled it out. If I reboot then it would not post unless I clear the cmos again.

But after doing some reading and looking apparently I can not run this card on my motherboard with out cheating a little. Apparently my motherboard has a 1.0a pcie slot instead of a 2.0 so it sucks for me. I should had done more research before I purchase this card.

Plus the wife is going to kill me when I tell her.

i dont think that is it either. my motherboard is only a pci 1.0 also, and it handles my 5850 fine. my bet is if you replace your motherboard you'll be good to go. Since your power supply replacement didn't fix it, maybe return the power supply, get a sub-$100 motherboard that takes your memory, and rock w/ that new video card.

I am still thinking its a bios problem but know ECS they are not going to make a new bios just for me seeing that not many peeps are using it now.

Right now I am using it but if I reboot I will have to reset the bios again to get it to post. I never really had this much trouble before out of this board. Whats wild is ECS tech support did answer my ticket and they think my motherboard is not compatible with the xfx 5830. I am still waiting on XFX tech guys respond to me.

Edit: I look up your card and its a 2.0 pcie while the one I have is a 2.1 pcie card.

Dang, sorry to hear that you're having issues. I guess now's the perfect time to get a new setup that's not so cpu limited. That x2 is going to make the 5830 seem like not much of an upgrade from the 3850; you'd be so much better off with at least an Athlon II x3 425 (2.7ghz) for a measly $70.

I know this thread is mostly about you graphics card/motherboard problem, but your cpu limitation is worth noting at this juncture.
