I just started folding and I’m hoping to get some advice.

I have a 2.4ghz core 2 duo system with 2GB of ram and an 8800GTS 320MB video card running server 2008. I only use this computer occasionally for testing out potential products in a network environment. So, I can have it dedicated to folding almost 24/7.

I have installed the SMP client as indicated in the sticky above and used the –smp switch. Are there any other switches I should be using? I have been working on my first WU for almost 24 hours and it’s at 94% and my CPU usage has stayed at almost 100%. Is this normal? And should I also install a GPU client? If so, which one?

I also have access to an older server. It’s an old Dell Poweredge 600sc P4 with 4GB of ram. Any advice as to what I should install on that?

Thanks for any advice, I want to help and would like to have an optimized setup.
 
depends on the work unit.


try usign a program like HFM.NET , it will tell you lots of information.

if its taken over 24 horus you have a logner WU, but yoru CPU is slower and only two cores

my Phenom II X6 1090T takes over 24 hours for some work units
 
For a dual core that's about normal. You should setup the GPU client as well.
 
I have an E5200 @ 3.0Ghz, and I'm pretty sure it has a TPF of around 15 min when I'm not using it. Unfortunately it is also my media center, so it sees use almost all day long. Most of my WUs go over 24 hrs for it.
 
Hey Krazen, that sounds about right.

For the Dell Poweredge you can try the Uni-processor client. It is the same as the SMP client, except you don't include the -smp switch, so it will download uni-processor units. Unfortunately uni-processor clients don't usually get over 1000 PPD but it's up to you whether it's worth the time/trouble.

For the GPU you can try the GPU2 client at Stanford's web site under the "high performance windows clients" page and should get about 3-4000 PPD from it, but it will increase power usage and heat by quite a bit and likely slow down your SMP client on the C2Duo by about 5% methinks.

The only flag you may want to add to the SMP client is -verbosity 9 which gives more verbose "event" descriptions and can be helpful in troubleshooting.

Now I'll just have to upgrade a few things to get that number up. I'm sure my wife won't mind....:D
