So, I don't know if this is a popular story now or not, but I've been waiting out Bulldozer on an old proc instead of building a new machine. I originally thought Bulldozer was coming out in June (I swear Q2 was a popular rumor). Now I've officially run completely out of patience for my machine's crappy performance at the things I consider integral to my day, and inability to do other things I'd like to start doing.

Question answers:

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Gaming, video watching, hosting 1000s of torrents (of course only a very small subset fully active at any given time), probably also hosting games, mention these things as ram usage can build up and the mobo I put in my current machine ended up never getting full gigabit support and it annoys me (P5N-D). Also plan to do some compiling, encoding, and general threaded number crunching that I can't do on my current machine. I foresee my graphically oriented girlfriend wanting to use Maya and Photoshop on the machine as well.

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
$2250 including tax and shipping. This is a max budget deal. If I can come in happily below and not notice a performance hit I'll be, well, happy.

3) Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please tell us the state and city if possible.

No. Please factor 64bit windows 7 into budget.

I'm pretty set on 2600k as part of this build. I don't think my mind can be changed there. I'm also pretty set on the Silverstone FT02B as a case. Outside of that all pointers appreciated.
 
Brother, I share your frustration!! Every 3 years (2005 & 2008) I rebuild my son's computer and I thought I was going to do the same thing this summer with Bulldozer. So I am with you on what a pain it has been waiting for Global Foundries & AMD to get their acts together. But hopefully the wait is only two more weeks!! If AMD doesn't ship BD on Oct 12-13 then you have every right to bypass BD and go Intel. You will be glad you waited the two weeks as, if BD has great benchmarks, you get it.. but if BD ends up sucking, it still should drive prices of other CPUs down. Plus the 2700K might be coming out the same time as BD at 2600K's price point. Thus the 2600K should be a little cheaper when that happens. At least this is the theory I am working on for my son's overdue build.. but I have until Christmas as the only PC game he is going to play is The Old Republic MMO. Good Luck!
 
i agree. for a high-end build youre at a pretty critical point, and if you can wait another 2 weeks to see what happens, you should. its so close now! i would say come up with a build in your cart over the next 2 weeks and if it doesnt come out then, go ahead and check out. :)
 
Where is the info that it should be coming out Oct 12-13? There's still no official announcement from AMD about a date as far as I can see. That's really enough to tell me there's a snowball's chance in hell of it being here by then. If there were any good reason to believe I could have a part in my hands in 2 weeks I'd be with you, but I'm certain that it won't. For what it's worth, quote me on it.

As for the 2700k, when has intel ever lowered the price on a part instead of releasing a new line? The 2700k does not sound like the 2600k's replacement...

Still looking for parts recommendations...
 
Im on my phone right now, but if no one puts together a descent build for you by the time I get to my desktop ill build a list for you. although im going to recommend getting a nvidia based video card on account of cuda with photoshop. It will be well under 2k dollars, probably even under 1k..

A few sites have listed these dates and CPU-World.com has the Bulldozers' ETA as October 12th.

The Intel i7-2700K features Turbo Boost technology, which allows it to accelerate up to 3.9GHz when maximum performance is required. According to VR-Zone, this model will be launched "in about a months' time", priced higher than the fastest unlocked Sandy Bridge CPU at this time, Core i7-2600K. Perhaps Intel will drop the price of the 2600K some since it will only be priced $14 less than the 2700K (official price of 2600K effective Sept 25 is $317) and has room to drop since it currently is $101 higher than the 2500K.

To answer your question about parts recommendations, take a look at PCPer's Hardware Leader Board.. their Dream System is about $1,500 without their video card pick (but it lacks case & heatsink recommendations). MaximumPC has a list of what it feels are the best hardware components at the moment. And you can also go cruising through Newegg's public wish lists for ideas on what others are wishing to build. Ah, didn't realize the 2700 was to be priced so close. Okee doke, I can wait that part out. I actually trust it to appear.
