need help on new machine

i just got my ibm laptop in the mail today and i'm typing on it now.

ok, i tried to install the folding at home console client, but for some reason, it says that there was an error and it was trying to connect. it tried to re connect 9 times and obviously it ain't connecting. i tried the graphical version and that started working right now!

ok, so is it worth it to use the console version? does anyone know the solution to why it won't download on the console version?

Congrats on the new machine! I can tell you I also have a laptop running wireless, and have no problems with it not d/ling.

 
I would use graphical just for simple fact of being able to pause work on the work unit. I use the graphical for my laptop. Every once inwhile I do like to pause the work unit b/c my lap gets a little to hot or something.

holy smokes! my cpu is at 100% and it's temp is only 43!!!

omg, this baby is staying on 24/7. :cool:

Only thing I can think of it maybe like ZoneAlarm blocking it.

If that isn't the case this might be a issue for the official forums.

Try your hardest for the console. It's worth it.

 
Norton has caused some interference before, I believe it plays nice currently, when set up correctly. Good luck and if its not working give a little more info and im sure we can help! :)

omg your a genious! I never configured norton so i just did that now and i re installed the console version and it's working! now off to download emIII!

I remember when Norton was like the king of AV, too bad they went straight down the tube, glad you got it figured out though.

 
the first thing i do with a new computer is get rid of norton :D or pretty much any software that comes with most computers for "spyware" "virus"

 
yeah well most oem pcs come with the free 90 day trial, so i'll replace it with mc afee soon.

another question.

after running my laptop all night folding, the cpu in the morning was 63 degrees. now, should i be worried? should i flip it upside down so that the heat radiates away from it? or should i lower the folding power so it doesn't run at 100%?
 
I lowered mine myself. I also try and prob it up a little bit so air can flow a little bit under it during the night

Thats too hot brother, you need lower the percentage it folds at. You could try a fan blowing across it and see if that is acceptable, I would like to keep it in the 50 degrees celsius range myself.

In theory laptops can run way hotter I think, depends on the chip.

I find it best that if it works, it works. I borged a Toshiba 1.5 Intel M and it's been running 24/7 @ 100% for a few months now.
 
yeah, i lowered it to fold at 50 and it seems like the temp was in the 40-51 degree range. so i guess that'll work out. my pentium 4 folds at 100% at that runs at 60 degrees. :p

but laptop is staying on 24/7 as that eats less power. ;)

oh, and would it help to flip it over or keep it in the correct position or leave the monitor open or closed, or how does that effect it?

I don't have a laptop but from what I've seen from others, I would just keep it closed and keep it up on something with a fan blowing on it when you are not actively using it.

 
Look at the cooling setup, I've found that elevating the rear 1/2 to 1 inch helps
 
hmm i'll try something like that, but since my out take vent is on left side, i just put like 2 cd cases there so it tilts it or is it a better idea to just flip it over?

Ideally you could flip it over so the heat radiates up and away from the components, however, most people just do the 2 cd case thing, and prop it up so air can get underneath it. In some cases I've seen people use those little usb desk fans to push a little air underneath as well.


 
Wouldn't it help to leave the screen open so heat can escape through the top? I have my laptop up on a couple pieces of 2x4 sideways so as to get it up off the table. Just make sure you aren't blocking the fan inlet(s) on the bottom or exhaust.
 
Make sure the fan intake for the laptop is clear of any obstruction, and make sure that the exhaust blows away from the intake. Blowing upwards is probably the best configuration. If you're not using the laptop, consider propping it up on its side (vertically, like a book in a bookcase).
 
ok, i'll prop up the left side with 2 cd cases. there is only a small vent on the bottom which is located near the center so i'm not sure if the intake is on the bottom. i believe it's under neath my keyboard so maybe it intakes air from there? i'll try propping it up and leaving the screen open.
