Need help on 2.1 speaker options

Looking at a couple of higher-end 2.1 computer speaker systems. I'm currently using headphones and a set of Creative Gigaworks T40 II speakers. I'm looking at the $300-500 price range for an upgrade. 2 of the sets I've been interested in so far is the Swan M50W on the lower end ($294) and the Edifier S730 ($499) on the higher end. I'm looking for some input on these, as well as potential other options in my price range. I would appreciate any and all help making a decision! I listen to all types of music, especially hardcore/metal, and electronic/dubstep. I like tight, crisp bass with some boom, but not a fan of muddier sounding subs.

PS - Also looking at a couple of sets of studio monitors as well, I'm just not as familiar with the way they sound. Some of the sets in my price range would be like KRK RP6 or 8, BX5A, etc. Just looking for the "best of the best" in my price range.
 
Yeah those are bit large. I prefer that they sit on my desk or if they were something like monitors on stands behind my desk.
 
I'm confused. You want computer speakers but not a receiver with sub and two nice speakers?

That said, if you are looking for a good receiver (amp) and a good sub-woofer and speaker system, I usually go with Klipsch speakers and subwoofer, but what I might suggest might be outside of your budget.
 
lol I know they are big. They would kick your ass though.

these are their little brothers. I would get them and an amp or receiver + a sub over the assortment of powered monitors. The guy that designed these knows what is what. TAD is legend.
 
With that kinda budget, I don't know why you wouldn't go with discrete components rather than something like the Swan set or the Corsair. It'll be a more flexible setup and a better value for the money.

Edit: Wow, Crutchfield is advertising free shipping to Puerto Rico on everything... Now that's a first. I'm suddenly compelled to upgrade stuff, argh!

You'll probably need to go to a specialty stereo shop. (Not a home theater shop, but if thats all that is in your area, might as well try)
