my brother, who couldnt be more cool, loaned me a bunch of money last winter. now is time to repay him.

i intend to repay him in full next week, but i also want to give him some interest. more cash isnt that much fun between us, as we know what we like.

my idea is a mini pc-jukebox. something with probably a 320gb harddrive, mini-itx style, low power but still runs windows (vista preferably).

do you guys think i could pull something off for $300? it doesnt have to be that fast or play games, i really just want something super small and good sounding. if i have to go to a shuttle-sized pc i feel that i might as well make him a full htpc. no monitor needed, he has a good flatscreen tv.

I was looking at itx boards, they re not cheap. have you considered mATX ?
 
i think ill go with an atom setup, i want low low power consumption. yet i have an extra copy of vista- but not xp. you guys sure i cant use vista on that atom board?

I don't think it can handle Vista. That's why in the Netbooks when they use Atoms, they either run Linux or XP, not Vista. It's a single core with hyperthreading technology. Thinks it's a dual core, but it's really not :)

It can't handle Vista whuch is why I suggested the above.

The Atom just doesn't have the processing power to run Vista. I'd highly suggest you use a Linux distro like Kbuntu + LinuxMCE if you don't want to shell out for an XP license - I'd even expect that Linux would run much better on an Atom CPU then XP would. Everything on the Atom board will be very well supported by Linux out of the box so you won't have to worry about drivers or anything, just do the install. LinuxMCE supports the Microsoft remote control as well if you wanted to pick up one of those.

You can use it but as everyone here has said: It will be sloooooww. This quote best sums up Vista and Atom:

So if you want to use Vista, CrimandEvil's setup is the better choice. If you're willing to use Linux or can find a legal copy of XP, then go with AMD_RULES' setup. Though I'd swap out that Seagate drive for a bigger, faster and slighly lower energy drive for just $10 more:

I only listed the Seagate as a personal preference :D
