Well here goes, this is my first HardOCP post after lurking forever. I am building a new server for my home network and I have a few requirements. I currently have a Buffalo Terrastation NAS that I want to replace, it's terribly slow for moving things (7 MB/sec) like DVD images, etc onto it and I just want a solid replacement solution which brings me to my questions for help.

Currently, I am planning on an average motherboard, possibly an ASUS or Gigabyte board with a decent Intel chipset as well as a low end Core 2 Duo proc, 2 GB of memory and will most likely run Windows Server 2003 on it. I may try Ubuntu Server as well. I would like to put a RAID solution in this box going with RAID 5. I am currently looking at using 4 Seagate STR3500530NS 500GB drives (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148151) with the ability of adding 2-4 more down the road by using RAID expansion. I also want the ability to replace a dead disk and have the RAID repair itself. My final requirement is in regards to speed and price. I would like a RAID solution that is fast. I want much better than 7MB/sec and would love to get 15-20+ if possible. As for price, I am thinking something under $300 would be great for a controller if possible. If that doesn't meet the other criteria, what would you suggest? What should I be looking for?
 
Take a look at my controller guide, specifically the Highpoint 2320 and kin. I wouldn't buy a 4-disk controller, since that precludes adding more disks in the future easily.
 
Thanks! I went ahead and ordered the HP 2320.. Will report on my experience when I get it all configured.
 
also unless you already have the win2k3 server os I would suggest going with FreeNAS . My server is running freenas with hp 2320 controllers, my 8 disk raid 5 gets about 42mb/s over intel pci-e gigabit network card.
