Need help finding some good closed headphones

I am in the market for some nice headphones. The Sennheiser HD555s are really intriguing, and are almost exactly what I am looking for (just to give you an idea), but I don’t want open headphones. For my purposes I don’t want to be letting a lot of sound in or out. That’s not to say they need to be noise canceling, just not open.

Any suggestions to point me in the right direction?

In that price range, the ATH-A700 from Audio Technica or (if you are lucky enough to find them cheap), the Beyerdynamics DT770 pro 80ohm.

if you game Beyer DT770 Pro/80's are great. I don't like them for music as much as Senns, and 600ohm 880's are vastly superior... saving up... need like $700 for the ones I want lol

I will second, or third I guess, the 770/80, I have owned them for probably 3+ months and absolutely love them. For music listening I enjoy them, but I do still got back to my 555s just for the different open sound.

Are you using an amplifier with your Beyers?

Not currently, no. They feel and produce fully without the need for one, though I have been assured that if I were to pick one up it would help, but not full needed. An amp is another expense that I did not want when buying headphones, thus the reason for the 770/80, but also left to the position that if I ever do get one I have a pair that will use one well.

yeah you have two choices really.

the AT 700 or the 770.

That simple. The 700 is probably the easier choice.

That's good news, thank you.

Why's this?

I would also like to know why you think the 700's are an easier way to go?
My 770's are a bit bulky, but the only time I wear them are in my house, and probably on a plane (going to test that this August). Unless of course I find some good solid noise canceling that sound just as good...odds are pretty low (suggestions?).

Sony MDR-7506 is a good choice for a low cost closed headphone. i have never heard them, but they tend to get positive press...perhaps they are worth checking out.

The 700s are closed and don't benefit from an amp like the 770s do. Simple. They also are better all around headphones. The 770s are just better for bass is all.

Really, cause I listen to classical about 90% of the time with mine & the highs are very clean, the mids can be a little soft, but the bass is strong though not something that dominates.

wow... I pity you for using your 770's for classical... they just aren't very good for that genre. I use my upgraded HD580's for classical :D

and I use my Beyer's amped... wouldn't use them any other way

Are your Beyers the 80 ohm version? If so, don't you think they're very good un-amped?

EDIT: I guess, since you suggested the 80 ohm ones to the OP, that they're the ones you own. I thought they were great without an amplifier, though.

Well, I am not some huge audiophile person by any means.
Though growing up with listening to classical music I have learned the ins & outs of sounds of what they should and should not sound like. I do not have an extensive collection of headphones, college student living on a budget, so I pick and choose what I feel is good. I do own some HD555, but I just felt they were holding back compared to the DT770, of course this is unamped.

To me an amp is something I only need to purchase if I am going to be building a nice system, but with limited money & only needing headphones DT770 are a great buy, and produce some good quality sounds. While the bass is heavy (as I said earlier) it is in a good manner that I see it. It does not overpower by any means, but merely brings the bass up to a more proper level of listening, though there are times it is to much. Yet that can be contributed to the recording I have.

I'm now ordering the Beyers! I hope they're as good as people say they are, and not as bad and underpowered without an amplifier as... other people say they are. :p

It is all personal opinion, you can always send them back if you are unhappy and look at another brand.

I must ask also, what do you recommend, for CLOSED headphone for classical listening?
Open are preferred, but with the higher price for the ones I wanted I decided to settle on the better 770/80.

Edit: Also, unamped.

Classical? unamped? Closed?

That's the A700 or A900 closed.

I am assuming you want to keep it inexpensive. Otherwise the AKG 501 amped is wonderful but has little bass.

May I ask where you're ordering them from (or anyone else who's bought them)? They're not terribly easy to find at a decent price in the US. Guitarcenter has em, but they're $200.

Anyone have any suggestions on where else to find the 770s?

I got mine there, I believe got got them for a bit less. They were probably running a deal or something. You can always try ebay, but that is buyer beware.

I got them in the UK for £80 so i can't really help you here, sorry. I think these DT 770 Pros are the only thing that's actually cheaper in the UK than they are in the US.

Yes, the 80 ohm Pros are widely regarded as the best sounding 770's. at one time I owned both 250ohm and 80ohm versions, but I sold the Pro/250's and kept the Pro/80's. I hear the 600ohm Beyers are the best... but you have to buy manufacture to get them. I've listened to a pair of 880/600's and they were spectacular. They also had leather pads, which helps with the bass... so I have a pair of leather pads on the way for my 770's.

How'd you swing that? They're listed on their website at $199.

magic :D lol

no, I just asked. Someone I know managed to get a manager to sell them a pair for $125, so I went in (different guitarcenter) and was able to get the same deal. But since then i know guitarcenter has changed their policy. I think managers can still discount down to around $160 though.
