First off sorry If i put this in wrong thread, didn't know where else to put this, maybe case modding? I don't know.

Anyway, I need a computer desk. I've froogled around 50 pages and kept finding the same desks over and over. All i need is a small (Not a corner desk) desk, with a slide-out shelf for keyboard (big enough to hold mouse), a pretty big desk for my 19 inch CRT, and maybe a top shelf would be nice. Also I need the computer to be on the floor, because I will be getting a 20 inch case and it won't fit if its on a shelf undeneath the keyboard slide out. My price range is under $120. I've tried Ikea.com, staples.com, officemax.com, officedepot.com, and RTA Desks website, finding nothing that is good. I've also tried Outpost.com, and Mertline.com, nothing. So if anyone knows a good site, that would be great, if not, I guess a trip to Ikea and Staples will be needed this weekend. Thanks.

Don't limit yourself to just desks. What I did was get two of the cheapest tables from IKEA (man, I miss that place) and put them together in a L formation. It sits in the corner of my room without any problem. I think that I went to Home Depot and spent like five bucks on some metal brackets and screws to hold it together. Works like a champ.

I think that it was Amazon.com that started out having all of their computers sitting on doors.

Seriously, desks at the store are outrageously overpriced for what you get (in most cases).

Just my $.02.

Cheers.

I agree with arcamv, don't limit yourself to "computer desks". I like a good solid wood table. Everything is steady, it's a good height (I find computer desks to be to low), it's deep enough for a large monitor, and with careful shopping the price is right.

I tried Best Buy, and that RTA is the one i was looking at as a matter of fact.

I was thinking about making one myself, or just getting a wooden table. I don't know though, I need a slide out shelf, I know I can make one myself but I am lazy.

You can buy Keyboard shelves that slide out from underneath a table. Some even come with mouse trays. I'm thinking of buying one to go on the middle drawer of my PIMP ASS circa 1960's $40 Walnut desk. You can always try used office furniture stores or garage sales and get a really good deal on a REALLY nice piece of furniture.

if you can, wait til the beginning of fall semester. a lot of places have deals then because of people going to college and needing new furniture. when i bought my desk from office depot they had a nice $70 off any desk over $200. if you look around and can wait.

other than that, office depot as the matrix ii workstation, which is a bit overpriced, if you ask me, but i think its what you're looking for

/fan of glass and metal desks...

I recommend the 10k desk.....

;)
I swear, this is never going to go away. Long after everyone who witnessed it firsthand is gone, people will still tell stories about the "10k desk."

I saw the thread title and that there were nine replies and all i was thinking was if someone had said something about that friggen 10k desk yet, and holy shit, the hardforums never cease to amaze me...

OK I give up. What's the 10k desk?

My rig in my sig is sitting on a toy table. I'm going to make my own this time.

I know I'm going to regret perpetuating this thing...

Some number of years ago (three? four? I don't remember.) A guy named lantec posted a picture of his new desk that cost $10,000 (Canadian, but still...). I'm sure it was nice, but the picture he posted made it look like three boards nailed to a wall. Everyone made fun of the guy for buying (for his parents buying, really) such a waste. He couldn't make a post anywhere without someone bringing it up and rubbing it in. He left the forum shortly after.

Wow, and I thought I was a stupid spoiled brat, but thats just sad.

My "desk" is a 5 foot table I got on sale for like $30. Before that I had a door sitting on top of 2 small bathroom vanities, and a hutch from another desk on top of it. My favorite cheap desks are folding tables though.

Does anyone still have a pic of the $10k desk? That was one of the first threads I saw when I joined here.

y'know, I think Lantec (the owner of the $10k desk) stopped coming here because people gave him so much shit about it, at least that's my theory. I think mainly everyone's biggest issue was that the $10k desk was essentially a couple shelves nailed to the wall and wasn't very dynamic looking at all. It looked more like some cabinet maker just made a ton of money off of someone else's stupidity.

Edit:

There, now we can all get on with our lives.

Wow I have been wanting to see that desk. Thats F'Ing 10 grand? WTF?!?!?!

Anyways. I got a huge L-Desk from Staples for $79. Decent quality. Mine not in the corner though. I have a large space behind me, its nice.

The funny thing about that 10k desk is that it looks like it wouldn't fit a CRT larger than 19".

I'm using a "Jerker" model computer desk from Ikea. Under 200 bucks, and huge! I have some of the optional add ons like CD racks, 2 verticle shelves and 1 swing out shelf arm. Its totally adjustableand easily fits my 20inch LCD (with lots of room behind it; even if it was a CRT it wouldn't fill it up) , ratpads, Klipsch speakers (well the front 3 anyway) and room for misc crap and usually a set of plates and mugs :)

Just make sure that your PC isn't closed in. I have a desk that has a cabinet where your PC should go. But I can't use it because my PC gets too hot in there. I got an attachment for a drill that cuts doorknob holes and I used it to drill about 3 good size holes in the back to open up the cabinet but it still wasn't enough.

You can find some desks that just have a tray that the PC fits into and sits under the desk. That'd be your best bet.

The worst part about that $10K desk was that he said something like "When I want to use a full-size notebook, I have to go to my old desk" and that blew what little dignity he had remaining.

Ok guys, take a thrifty girl's suggestion and check out IKEA. Yes I know, you're going to say "Ewwwww! IKEA!??". All I have to say is check them out. Their prices are outstanding.

Here is a link to the corner computer workstation I am using now:

And here is a quick image of it if the link does not work:

The whole thing came in a box, and had to be assembled as most of their products do. That is one reason that their things are so cheap.

I've used IKEA for a TON of stuff in my apartment, from couches, to my bed, to my workstaion and on and on. The reason I use them is that they are SOOO cheap, yet are trendy in a sort of pseudo european retro style. Pretty neato. It also helps that I have an IKEA near my home, so I can go there directly to shop for what I need. But I have ordered online with them, and their shipping and billing is very reliable.

You guys should check it out :) Hope this helps you all out a bit.
