Need help diagnosing a cause for computer locking up

I recently built the AMD system in my signature below, but have been getting a lot of locking up in Oblivion. I'm running windows 7 64 bit home edition.

I reset the bio to defaults so the CPU is running at 3.4 ghz, and i backed the ram down from its rated speed of 1600 to 1333 mhz. Nothing in the system is overclocked.

Here are the problems I've been getting:
1) The screen goes black and is replaced with a pattern of small squares, causing a hard computer lock up.
2) The screen will go back and a warning dialog will pop up that says "Oblivion.exe has stopped responding" but it causes a hard computer lock.

It never crashes to desktop, i just get these two hard locks, and so far has only happened in Oblivion but it will happen about once per hour.

Can you please help me figure out what is going on?
 
I think its the video card. I had very similar trouble with a MSI Twin Frozr III 6950. I had to RMA it.
 
1) What PSU are you using?
2) Is this issue happening with ay other game besides Oblivion?

Antec High Current Gamer 650 W, and it hasn't happened on any other game, even those that are much more curent and demanding.
 
Does Windows not provide system logs? It is usually easier for the computer to tell you what is wrong than randomly guessing

I feel like a noob but i honestly don't know how to check logs. Can you please inform me? EDIT: more specifically, how do i interpret the info, i know how to pull up the log.
 
Well i took the 7850 from that PC and put it into my other PC (the one with the Q9550), and now this computer is having all sorts of problems, while the other one is working fine. Now on this PC im getting all sorts of artifcating and stuff, so most likely the video card. RMA'ed with newegg.
