Question. I'm trying to find the HDD I want on NewEgg, and the search results returned hard drives with different interfaces. What's the difference between a Serial ATA interface and an IDE interface? Also, they are offering them with Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) technology and Shock Guard for a little bit more. There's also another expensive one with the features "Data Lifeguard Tools, Backplane compatibility". What are those, and is it worth spending the little extra money to get that one in particular? The cheaper alternative offers "High-Performance with 8MB Buffer". Finally, what does it mean when it says "OEM Drive Only"?

In addition, I'm also picking out my final disc drives for the comp that I'm about to build. What's the current best CD RW and DVD RW?

Thanks in advance. :D

Hmmm, looks like you're pretty new to the hard drive scene. Well, in any case, SATA and IDE are the common names of the two most common interfaces on today's home PCs. SATA is newer, faster, and better, but you need a motherboard or controller card that supports it. Look at your motherboards specifications to see if it does.

Once you do that, figure out how much you're willing to spend, and then see what's available for that price. Look at reviews, and decide which is best on your own.

As far as Fluid Dynamic Bearings... anything that can reduce that horrible whine is worth it.

Onboard SATA/RAID: 4x Serial ATA, RAID 0/1

Looks like I've got support for SATA, and a Raid Array along with that. You say it's newer and faster, so I'll go with that one. Thanks for your help. ;)

Still looking for good floppy, CD, and DVD drives, but I'll probably have those picked out soon. Feel free to post any ideas if you have them, though. Thanks. :)

HD..WD or Seagate or Samsung SATA.

Floppy..doesn't matter.

If you want multiple optical drives, get a Toshiba DVD-ROM and a NEC ND-2510 DVD+/-RW.
