Just finished installing everything in my new computer. However, when I turn it on , I get a "USB Init" on the post lcd and I can't enter the BIOS, it just seems to hang. Anyone know why this is and/or what I need to do to fix this and get it so I can actually use my new comp.

Here are my parts in case there are some known issues:
QX6700
Plextor 755SA
2GB Gskill DDR2
Two 8800 GTX's
150 Raptor

k, I've tried:
clearing the CMOS and rebooting,
booting with 1 stick of RAM,
booting w/ either the HDD or DVD drive disconnected,
booting w/ both drives disconnected,
and booting with the front USB ports disconnected and no luck.

Please if anyone has any other ideas let me know. I am searching the asus forums with no luck so far. The last thing I can think of is flashing the bios.

First remove the battery for half a day, then put it back in , reset cmos via the jumper ( did you place this one correct to enable the button, if not the buton doesn't work), then put jumper back into default position, then try to boot with one ram dimm and one VGA card.. rest detached... If no boot try the other dimm...

Also which Gskill ram is it ? some have issues booting at the stock 1.8 volts the board gives on first boot, some users had to buy some cheap ram dimm to getinto the bios, set correct values ( mostly voltage) and then replace the cheap ram with the gksills again...

Also what PSU do you have (brand , amperages at 12 volt )

If you can flash then bios flash immediately to 1002 bios which helps a lot of users with this board...

As of now, I tried removing the battery for a half day and replacing it, removing one of the GTX's, and using one stick of the PC2-8000 mentioned below. Now the monitor gets to the "Republic of Gamers" logo and hangs, not letting me into the bios when I press delete. The post on the back says "MSINSTAL". I am hoping to try my friend's lower gskill memory out sometime this week. to see if that is the problem. I looked at the sticker on my RAM and it says 2.2v - 2.3v. I hope that is the problem, so that I don't have to RMA the bored.

I have the F2-8000PHU2-2GBHZ 1GB

I have the PCP&C Silencer 750, which is what Johnny Guru recommended to me after I gave him my specs. Not sure what amperages it gets though.

At the moment I have 0701 version and I am hoping I can avoid flashing until I at least get vista installed. It seems a lot of people have problems flashing and ruin their chip. I've never done it before some I'm a bit nervous to try, lol.

Thx for your post leeghoofd, I'll post back after I've tried my friends memory. Any other advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I had that gskill ram too , and had about same issues as you , bought some ocz ram booted with that , set ram voltage to 2.2 shut down, swapped ram and off it went, glad you are already seeing the bios logo now ( that's a good sign ), in case the ram of ya friend works fine, flash the bios to 1002 plz with EZ flash eg, it solves loads of probs with ram compatability...( could be you have to do the battery trick again , I had it with mine  )

k good news :) I got it to boot the bios with my friends memory, changed the voltages and then my gskill worked. Now, however, when I try to begin to install OEM vista ultimate I get blue screens I random spots in the install. Any Ideas? I've tried different sticks of memory removing gfx cards. You think I need to increase the voltage of my memory? Currently it is at 2.2.v

I would check asus forums to verify, but now that you got it to boot the FIRST thing to do is get it to a good bios version. Use floppy method, its all in your manual. its the internet or windows flash utilities that kill boards, use a new good floppy, make damn sure you have the right file and its easy to do. Installing the OS on a board with an old buggy bios is just asking for major trouble.

Good luck, your getting there !

1) First set the timings manually for the ram and Gskill recommends 2.2-2.4 volts, check in ya hardware monitor in the bios where the ram voltage is at , also up the NB voltage to 1.4 plz which makes the board more stable...

2) Disable SLI memory and linkboost plz

3) Like Parrish told you to do and I did too plz go for 1002 bios before trying to install any OS...

4) then make a bootable copy of memtest on ya friends rig and test the ram before installing the OS

Why doesn't anyone mention CD-R these days? To me CD-R seems a much easier and better option than USB-Drive.

Well I agree but get this, stupid Gigabyte bios flash routine built in the bios only supports floppy. Gah, guess it would eat up too much bios space to have CD drivers in there too.

But yea, CD is good too, you have to know how to make a bootable one with the right files and its not hard, but some peeps have never done it before. I am need to make a guide for that I guess.

Funny you should mention that Bill, as I have never flashed a bios and I am having trouble making a bootable floppy.

On the Asus sight it says that their AFLASH utility can only run in DOS and not MS-DOS and that I should use the "Format A: /S" command to format the floppy to make it bootable. However, when I try that command in XP it doesn't recognize the /S flag. I googled on creating a DOS boot diskette but the things I tried didn't work.

What seemed like a simple task, is now holding me up, so if anyone could help me with my noob formatting skills it woud be appreciated. :p

Asus Striker Extreme EZ-Flash BIOS doesn't need the CD-R to be bootable at all. It just needs an attached drive. I've built 3 different systems with Strikers now and each time I've updated the BIOS from a CD-R I put together which contained all the possible BIOSs for this board. EZ-Flash lets you select which BIOS you want to flash to. It lays out the contents of the CD or attached drive in a file directory structure which you can navigate using the keyboard. You can even flash straight from your C:\ Drive if the file is on there..

What motherboard are you using jtruax28?

If you are using the Striker Extreme like the original poster, then do the following:

1. Copy the BIOS file to the floppy. In this case it would be the SE1002.bin file (latest BIOS for the Striker Extreme)
2. At post, press Alt + F2.
3. The EZ-Flash utility will come up.
4. On the left, choose which directory you would like to search for a compatible .bin (or BIOS) file.
5. Once you have chosen the A:\ or Floppy drive (If it is not named under the letter a: for the time being. I have seen different letters on drive than usual in this utility), choose the SE1002.bin file and press "Enter".
6. EZ-Flash will ask you if you would like to overwrite the current BIOS, choose yes.
7. Done and dusted...

If you aren't using the Striker Extreme, nevermind. ;)

Well I'm typing this from vista ultimate. Thank you all for you advice and trouble shooting that helped me get up and running it would have taken waaaaay longer had I been forced to figure it out on my own. :D

Final Solution:
Update memory voltage to 2.2v for gskill f2-8000-2gbhz
flash to bios 1002
change NB voltage to 1.4v

I should clear something up I said earlier in this post which I found out yesterday wasn't true.

You CANNOT find a file from EZ-Flash on your HDD. I got that drive letter confused with my other DVD Drive because I was just skimming over the options of the drives to flash from. It was a noob mistake. haha. Sorry guys..

well dont let it happen again dammit, or we will find you and kill you. you know that only true, completely accurate, honest and fair posts are allowed here.
