Need help backing up a HD

I just bought a 60Gig, 2.5" HD for my laptop to replace the 40 gig I have in it right now. I want to transfer everything onto the 60gig- what is the best and easiest way to do this? I've heard of Nortong Ghost, but I'm not exactly sure how to use it.
 
the "easiest" way in my oppinion would be to hook both up to a PC using adapters and then clone them using any of a lot of available utilities, such as DriveImage XML, Acronis TrueImage or if you are a Linux guy dd may be able to do it.

I actually have a 2.5" enclosure, so I can just hook it right up to my laptop and do it like that, correct? I'll check on those two programs.
 
Ok, I've got my drive copied but now, when I put the new one in I'm not able to boot. Anything else I need to do?
 
What method did you use to copy the drive? Did your method also set up the MBR on the new disk?
 
To copy a Windows installation on the fly, you need to do one of two things: Use an imaging program, or disable the protected storage service so that you will be able to retrieve the machine keys.

Also, you will need to make sure that the partition on the new drive is set to active, you cna do this in Disk Management (Start\Run\diskmgmt.msc)
 
I used Drive Image and I ran the Drive to Drive option. Not exactly sure what you mean by setting up the MBR but I did partition the drive in the disk management. I just went in and set the drive to "active" so I'll swap them out again and get back with a status.

Thanks! I'm back up and running with my new HD. Setting it to "Active" did the trick.

Which program did you use? The free one or Acronis?
