Need core 2 duo advice

I'm debating whether or not to jump to a c2d right now. with july 22nd's price drop right around the corner, i'm not entirely sure of what to do. i currently have a p4 at 3.0ghz and i game alot. The quadcore q6600 is supposed to drop to $230 with everything else dropping a lot too. should i just hold off until then or get a cheap c2d right now?

I would wait if I had a choice like that and jump on the quad core wagon , if you can buy a board that will support the penryn family too
 
well i have the asrock conroexfiresata2, i dont think it has quad-core support.
 
I would probably wait. I have seen those price cuts and some are massive. Memory would be a good buy instead now and might not be so latter. They made memory at a loss and market is flooded so they are almost giving it away. I have read when memory prices go back up makers try to make up for losses and use high prices. I myself am not interested in quad core until its native - or 4 cores as one and not 2 C2D's nailed together. It's nice to have the best quad friendly board you can have as well since 4 cores can bottleneck fsb. So I'm not sold on quad cores yet. Maybe with Skulltrail (2 quad cores on mobo) and Nephalem quad core will look more interesting to me. But if prices are lower at least that makes it more interesting. thats a good point. i have good ram right now. i have ddr2-800 crucial ballistix. should i get an e4300 now and maybe get a higher end c2d when the price cuts? or should i just hold off all together?

You could wait... but then why not wait for Penryn? Then the next one and the next one? Unless it were happening TOMORROW, it's kinda silly to wait months and months :).
 
Happy with my C2D E6420. Cost me $180-something at NewEgg around the 15th, stock speed is 2.13Ghz. Runs 3.2Ghz on my $50-something on massive sale a while back Thermaltake POS watercooling system (you could buy a Sunbeam Tunique tower air cooler for similar price and get similar performance now, not having to worry about water either) @ 1.35 vcore, 30C idle, 50-55C full load, completely stable. Linked/synced that's 800Mhz DDR for the RAM too. Obviously no overclock is a "sure thing" but this seems to be typical, if a little on the cool running side.
 
i can't look at this stuff anymore. i don't have the money to upgrade to dual or quad cores and would rather spend the money elsewhere :eek:

i didn't have the money to build a top end system in 2003, so i spent $1400 total with XP pro, office, 19" flat screen, $140 on the older 2.4C and lucked out and overclocked it to almost 3.7ghz, where at the time the 3.0's and 3.2 P4's came out and cost $500 or more! ahhhh, its history repeating itself again!!

i wonder how much longer this single core will hold me over! the x1950 helped out alot :p

what core is the P4 3.0 you have?
 
Kind of doubt that ASROCK board was built with overclocking in mind, so you /may/ have issues reaching higher FSB if you can't get to voltages for some things. My suggestion, given the board and everything else, would be to wait for the price drop, grab a new motherboard, processor, and something like a Tuniq Tower http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835154001 or a big Thermalright heatsink, and clock the new CPU up a bit. Might cost you another $100 but should be well worth it in the long run.
