Hey,

I'm running my Barton 2500+ @ 10.5 x 200 or 3000+. I've had it that way for a year or so, no real problems.

In an attempt to get quieter, I have been messing with my case fans, putting in the stealths from Vantec. I also put a Silent Cat over my Silent Boost HS.

I run Prime 95 and have temps around 52C with spikes that go higher.

I really don't think that is "good" cooling. The proc hasn't shut down or anything so it's not a lockup issue at this point.

What HS should I get to go with this Silent Cat fan? I am hoping for QUIET as I record music with this and the mics pic up everything. I also don't want it to overheat in the middle of a take, so it's kind of a trade-off I guess.

After the HSF suggestion, what should I do, fanwise, in order to maximize airflow while staying quiet? I have an Xdreamer2 case with an Antec True Power 430W PSU. The X-Dreamer has a window with an 80MM fan, and the case also has a blowhole 80mm fan.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Water Cooling is the best for all general cooling and phase change is the best for extreme cooling but.....You could get a nice air cooling block from ZALMAN and be good...7700ALCU zalman, but you need lots of room for it if not just get the smaller Zalman line of blocks....Oh if ur going with Wcing go with the danger den system
 
If you want better temps with quite operation with better system performance I would recomend going to a good water cooling set up. With the right equipment and a large enough radiator with decent fans you should be able to achive temps that are tons lower.

assuming that you plan to stick with socket A for a little while longer, then this with good thermal compound (arctic silver 5) and a reasonably fan.............maybe a thermaltake smartfan II or a panaflo medium. DEFINATELY not the "stock" delta fan though.

the bigger 7700 is not socket A compatible, according to the zalman website. i am suggesting the lower priced alcu version, since you do not seem to be aiming for the stars with your overclock, and it wold be kind of silly to invest heavily in socket A hardware at this point.

I don't really want to get into watercooling, but want quiet, effective air-cooling.

That ALX-800 I will probably give a try if I find it.
 
3 things with cooling that I have learned. Its very hard to have all three. normally you can have only 2. So...
(Especially with air)

#1.) Quiet
#2.) low temps
#3.) Overclock

For the most part you might be able to get 2 of the 3 but Not NORMALLY all 3. Just has been my experiance. But your oc may be modest enough. could try to put sound deadening material inside the case to help quiet it down.

NOO STOP DONT THE THE ALX. go for a SP-97 or SI-97 from thermalright

i would NOT reccomend the SP-97, if you want reasonable noise levels, though.

my own experience with it is that it needs quite large airflow to work reasonably, although with a delta screamer, it performs even better than watercooling, with a noise penalty.

I had been reading all night and found that exact review. LOL! I am going to try the SI-97.

tell that to the people with 92mm panaflows on these hitting 2800mhz on the older barton mobiles(i say older cause newer technology and better chip wafers are avalible now)
 
well, my own expeience with my rig would tend to indicate that it is more a function of how good the CPU is, as opposed to how good the heatsink is.

my core temps don't get over 25 C while priming, with my mobile 2600, and 2.6 is the max that i can hit at 200 FSB while keeping my voltage below 2.0.

don't get me wrong though: it is a wicked cooler, i just think that it just takes a wicked fan to get the most out of it.
