i want to overclock my cpu and right now it has a stock fan. i was wondering what type of cooling should i get for this processor.

I would get a minimum of an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro.

Probably I'd grabe a Xigmatech or a TRUE if you want best performance.

if i oc my cpu and put on a good coling fan should i oc my memory too? i have 4gb OCZ platinum 800mghz. i will be gaming.

i was told if i put in a new cooling fan for my Q6600 i will have to take the whole mother board out and put a bracket underneath to hold the fan. is this true? i have a P5E MB.

That depends on what cooler you get. If it uses a backplate, then yes you will. If it uses pushpins, you could leave the motherboard in, but it is still recommended that you remove it for install.

In any case, this question has been answered many times before. Try searching and you will see. I am personally very happy with my Thermalright Ultra Extreme, but it is one of the pricier coolers.

also the TRUE (Thermalright Ultra Extreme) is very heavy as well. 790g, which is pretty heavy for JUST a heatsink, not including the fan you want to mount on it.

I personally have the AC Freezer 7 Pro which is only 520g including fan. If you're not going for the absolute top OC on your cpu, the AC Freezer 7 pro will do you fine. If you're looking to get the absolute most OC out of your cpu, and you don't want to switch to water, go with the TRUE.

This is probably a question for a new thread... sorry

This is a good question. I'm looking for a cooler as well, but it needs to be lightweight as I transport arouond for recording sessions quite a bit and I know a heavy cooler will put a lot of stress on the chipset as well as the processor. How heavy is too heavy?

Check this out: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233003
$37 w/ free shipping right now. The Xigmatek HDT-S1283. It meets or beats the TRUE(depending on fan of TRUE, of course). The 1283 is 600G WITH FAN! So it's very light for it's size, altho it does use the Intel pushpins but you can order a bolt-through kit so no worries. btw Intel recommends 450g for the stock pushpins, but if u're truly worried get the $4 bolt kit from here http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/lgbowiscsp.html
The $7 kit with some clamp or backplate is http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/lgboforulula.html

Also, if getting the 1283 with the copper heatpipes, use AS5 or AC MX-2 instead of the crap silicon-based thermal paste that comes with the Xigmatek.
