Guys, looking to build Linux workstation on a budget. Going to use it as a storage server, webserver, to run some background apps, like torrent ... Ocasionaly to play with lightweight desktop. Nothing fancy. I already have some stuff: Case, PSU, Optical drive, can dig for old graphics card. Basically looking to get MB+CPU+RAM. Thinking about $100. Do not want CPU with power consumption > 65W
I see a deal for that combo
Zotac GF6100-F-E NVIDIA GeForce 6100/nForce 430 MCP AMD AM3 MicroATX Motherboard
AMD Athlon II X2 250 Regor 3.0GHz AM3 65W Dual-Core Desktop Processor
~$70 AR, just need to add memory. Can I get 4GB for $30? Only gripe, there is no IDE and expansion slot.
What do you think? anything else? I do not hesitate to get used, but do not want to drop CPU performance below mentioned above.
Thanks,
--Yuri
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Linux server (SlackWare?) as a home web server, storage, maybe some background apps, like torrent ..., may be (ocasionaly) some lightweight desktop.
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
$100
3) Where do you live?
MD
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word
"Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
MB+CPU+RAM
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
Case, Power supply, may be graphics card if not on MB already
6) Will you be overclocking?
No.
7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
LCD over DVI
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
ASAP
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video? etc.
GB Lan, prefer any onboard video, IDE or expension slot where I can stick discerete IDE controller.
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?
Planing to put free Linux, probably SlackWare.
